Intel X58 Chipset Details Leaked

Leaked slides from Intel are floating around the Internet saying that Intel X58 paired with ICH10/R southbridge will be the first chipset combo to support Intel Bloomfield desktop processors, part of Intel's 45nm Nehalem architecture. The following list shows only a few of the new features that will be presented with Intel's forthcoming high-end platform:

• Intel Bloomfield is a 45nm quad core processor that supports 8 processing threads and use LGA 1366 Socket
• Bloomfield CPUs will come with 8MB of shared L2 cache
• Bloomfield supports IMC (Integrated Memory Controller) and triple-channel DDR3 RAM
• Bloomfield supports QPI and adds seven more SSE4 instructions.
• Motherboards with Intel X58 chipset that will support Bloomfield processors will utilize PCI-e 2.0 slots working in dual x16 or Quad x8 configurations.

And acording to reviews (most notably Xbit labs) X48 is nothing more than marketing bullsh..
At least with the current CPU's, bios (and hardware in general)there is no noticeable difference in overclocking or anything else... Ok so it suports FSB 1600 and works exclusively with ddr3 Wow.. is that realy worth the hefty price of x48 motherboards?

However I am confident that X58 will most probably be a good chipset.

My stupid mistake you are both right Gigabyte has both x48 and x48T(DDR3) for example and so do many others.

Nehalem will be DDR3 exclusive from what is known so far. I was thinking of it probably.

The x48 is a bit optimized compared to x38. I didnt want to say that it's the same damn thing Just that from current reviews performance is marginaly (if at all better) compared to it's predecesor. However it's price is not in the "value" segment that's for sure

The amazing thing is the memory controller on chip (on die?), and DDR3. The bandwith potential is boggling, but how will that affect overclocking?

Direct memory access from the CPU is what got AMD the performance crown for so many years. Intel will raise the bar yet again (after the Core2).

NVidia usually decides what will support SLI - they just have to make thier drivers work with it Unfortunately they have historically have only supported thier own chipsets, There were some hacked drivers floating around to work with Intel / AMD chipsets

I suspect only DDR3, based on the fact that the memory controller is on the CPU.

For now these are rumors but Intel designed what they call a "bus-lock" which prevents all forms of overclocking for their sub-400 dollar (and/or non- LGA1366) CPU's.

I don't care about SLi support. It's the non-Bloomfield overclock-lock I'm worried about.
If the rumor turns out valid then here's what you'll have to pay if you're interested in OC'ing Nehalem:
LGA1366 CPU: $400/€ ->
X58 motherboard: $250/€ ->
2-3 DDR3 DIMMs: $300/€ ->>

What does it mean? AMD could capitalise on this and roll out great CPU's that OC and are priced under $400. The pricing of the Phenom X4 9850BE already makes it a great <$250 quad-core CPU, similar products from AMD could hit Intel where it hurts the most, the sub-$400 CPU market.

Yeah, it's easier on Nehalem CPU's which allow OC'ing. That news is just about as much a rumour as cheaper CPU's coming with bus-locks. Intel can sense that some people use those E2140's / E7200's that come with lower FSB but higher multipliers, OC the crap out of it, and avoid buying the more expensive offerings. I don't deny that bus-lock is a rumour, as stated in the first sentence of that post.
