Eurocom Lets Loose D901C Phantom-X 'Server' Laptop

Eurocom has launched the D901C Phantom-X laptop, a piece of machinery you don't see every day. It is no accident that the word server is being used in the title. The Phantom-X can be configured with a server based Intel Xeon X3360 quad-core chip running at 2.83GHz (45nm, 12MB of L2 cache), 17-inch 1920x1200 display, a 2x Blu-ray burner, up to 8GB DDR2-800 of RAM, a pair of GeForce 8800M Go GTX graphics chips, three 64GB solid state disk drives (each one of these adds around $1400 to the price a piece), as well as Windows Server 2008 OS. The overall price of the laptop with all optional parts maxed out is roughly $10 000, not a bad deal for a laptop (joke). If you ask about the battery life, it's a twelve cell Lithium Ion one that will power the laptop for an hour. So if you're looking for the ultimate laptop this is probably the best one you can find. An updated model that will have the physical space to integrate up to six hard drives for up to 3TB of storage space is also planned for September.

why the hell would you need 2 8800M GTX's in that thing?? unless your gonna have 10 monitors plugged into it at once it seems a little overkill IMHO - or is it so people with money can quickly set up their small/large lan games without having to resort to performance leeching when hosting the games on their PC/laptop???

Personally I would prefer that as a desktop, I really cannot see how a laptop of that specification be practical but its good if you can afford it.

When they integrate the hydrogen fuel cell technology into laptops in the next 5 years, then I would love to have one of these. You could run a server without any power from a third world country, so you could travel around, and never have the evil RIAA catch you for pirating songs. Isn't that everyone's dream? portable, tbh I don't see a reason you'd ever take it off the cord...but it's worth it for LAN hosting and everything else you'd ever need
you could set up a grassroots business around one of these, then move office to the bahamas every so often

I can sort of understand the 10K price tag, but the sad thing is that in three years that'll be about 1K worth of hardware.

It's a laptop, maybe low battery life, but the USP is portability, You can't carry a rack / E-ATX tower with you on an Arctic expedition where all your machines are notebooks, why not server as well?

This thing can do wonders for field-research teams needing tons of computational power (and networking) on the move, I'm sure as hell it won't draw power on par with a rack/tower.

Yes, the D901C notebooks are huge, heavy, and suck power like mad, but in most cases, they are dektop replacements, not laptops for the train. For those that have the money for one of these, it is a hell of a lot better than carrying your server rig around with you...
