I'm afraid I have some bad news for you. Tom's Hardware has learned that ATI is going to delay the launch of its ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 cards a bit to June 23th. Originally the cards were slated to come on June 18th. The GDDR5 equipped ATI Radeon HD 4870 cards will now launch at the same time as the 4850 512MB GDDR3, but it is unclear whether there'll be enough GDDR5 chips to ship the 4870 in volume right after its official launch. The report also claims that although the cards are delayed, add-in-board companies have them available right now. NVIDIA plans to launch the GeForce GTX 200 series on June 17th. In case there are no more "unexpected" delays, NVIDIA will be first this year to show its GeForce GTX 280 and GeForce GTX 260 cards, a week later AMD should follow with ATI Radeon HD 4870 GDDR5 and Radeon HD 4850 GDDR3.

I suppose the downside to this would be that when nvidia's cards come out they're probably going to be benched against current generation 3870's and the like. Could trick consumers into thinking ati is garbage for a little while.

i think this is a mistake by ATi :shadedshu

they've missed/postponed too many release dates with their GFX cards, IMO they need to get one out BEFORE Nvidia

This might make the difference between a paper launch and a real launch. I'd take the extra week. That way more people who want the cards can get them immediately.

No biggie... Let Nv show their cards off first.. Though 1 week is hardly any time to make changes to anything at this point, I could only imagine that this is a 'show boating' move..

Sure ATI almost always has delays, but isn't this the first time in a long damn time that ATI may actually release along with Nv? Usually we wait for ATI to release well after Nv.. And of course then, we are usually dissapointed.. This ,however, could really be something.. I'm more interested in the 4xxx line than any other line they've had before..

I've heard manufacturer's are a little upset since thay have cases and cases of 4850's just laying around. Perhaps it's a driver thing? Perhaps, ATi decided to just launch the 4850 with the 4870. I think we may see them in etail/retail before the 23rd anyways...

Im 100% NV fan, but I have nothing against ATI other then the fact that games just dont look as good to me on ATI cards, with out DV they all look to bland.

I think ATI is in a good place, they are targeting the mid to low end market, and giving out good cards with a low price, but ppl need to wake up ATI has not had a Top card sence the 9800Pro IMO.

On the other hand NV charges way to much for little difrence in their mid/top cards, you pay 50-100% more money for 5-25% gains.

What are you? a saint hiding in the bushes/forest for last 300 yrs? ATI has the best picture quality in all the newer cards and even the older ones are far better than nVidia. Nvidia excelled in HD picture quality a tad bit (because of DV) and more flexibility in drivers setting up Screen resolution (my TV has a wierd 1080P resolution setting). I am hardcore AMD/ATI fan and I have to go to NVidia because of those mentioned reasons.

The 19xx series was > than the 79xx series. Still is. They traded blows, but overall The 19xx was > than the 79xx's. IQ was superior as well.

This is not a thread to argue about image quality. Please stay on topic, thanks.

I get the feeling this is related to the GDDR5 shortages, and ATI wanting to keep the 4850 and 4870 within a certain timeframe of each other . . .

it's rare that ATI delays new hardware launches that have already had a date set, I think this will be the first time since the 1800 series, IIRC.

I'm pretty sure that R600 was delayed many times. I just hope with this delay, there will be enough 4870's for all!

Well, we all know R600 was delayed like a mofo due to the merger . . . but there wasn't any launch date set until they were ready to roll

but I mean, the cards being delayed after ATI has already set a launch date

y'know - like what nVidia does with just about every new series release :D

Nvidia have always priced their hardware accordingly.
Ye sure they are always more expensive, thats because they always had better performance. You want better, you pay more.

The 8800 set a new height in gfx card prices, but same with performance.

For someone with half an understanding of C++ with the combination of basic understanding of computers in general, they would opt for the new Nvidia range due to CUDA which cannot be rivalled by AMD/ATi.

I agree that its not a mistake that AMD/ATi are delaying the launch, its just a complete stuff up. This one week late launch will force me to build over 15 gaming rigs with Nvidia cards :(
