Laptops Set to Overtake Desktops

Desktops have been the dominant computer format ever since personal computers first took off, but a new report has suggested that laptop sales will overtake those of desktops by 2011. Analysts predict that the laptop market will grow by 16.1% each year until 2011, with just 3.8% predicted for desktops - during 2006, 140 million desktops PCs were shipped worldwide with 82 million portable computers being sold, up 2% and 26.3% respectively from 2005. Shifting towards mobile computing is becoming more popular as the performance gap gets smaller and notebook computers become cheaper, aided by the increased availability of wireless networks. In the USA, laptop computers have already begun outselling desktops, with 2005 being the first year in portable computers became the number one choice. Desktops are likely to remain the main choice for computer enthusiasts and those wanting to get maximum performance, as their easy upgradeability and more powerful components make them a more suitable option.

That's exactly my thoughts, You can't just go out and buy parts to build your own laptop. Hell, it's even hard to get on Alienware's website and design one.
Last time I bought a new PC was when I was in 8th grade way back in 1999.
AMD K6-2 450mhz
64MB PC100
Rockwell 56k Modem
SiS video processing of some sort
10GB hard drive
$1200
I've built my own ever since.

Yay lappys for the win i love the fact that i can easily lug around mine to lans and my mates places instead of luggin a monitor case mouse ect.

And yeah it aint as powerful as a latest desktop but i dont care im already set up when everyone else is hooking up there desktops.

Sorry, but I kinda view desktops as disposable PCs.

Sooner or later I'll have to pick up a lappy for improved vehicle diagnostics, considering how quickly I'm starting to see newer and newer models rolling into the shop, and frankly, the GETAC is the only brand I know of capable of withstanding an automotive work enviroment.

The army needs that laptop REALLY badly. The laptops they have now are shit.

But anywho, this is good news! That means more people aren't getting suckered into buying a pos out of the box system with incompatible parts and wondering why they're horrible performance wise.

I have 2 things to blame for this, the internet and the availability of usefull information.

With a price like that--if you're middle eastern decent... or just really tan--I wouldn't take it into any coffee shops. Us simple folk can't handle that type of thing.

That's exactly my thoughts, You can't just go out and buy parts to build your own laptop.

WRONG. Yes you can- it's just not worth it cashwise. Basically you have to buy a chassis with a motherboard and screen ( a bit like a barebones system) and then add additional parts. Compared to budget offerings from major companies it's not cost-effective.

That would be one super heavy lappy makes my one look like a sumo by comparison.

yeah, they're a bit heavy . . . the model I linked to clocks in at about 13lbs (5.9kg for you metric users ) - but with a GETAC, you can drop kick it, use it in the shower, set it running on top of a running neighborhood generator . . . check out their durability tests: http://www.getac.com/getac/English/about_getac/whyrugged.aspx#

Lappies are great and all, but they will never, EVER be as fast as desktop. I can build a $800 rig that beats a $4000 dell lappy into the ground, pours gas over it, & lights it on fire - then watches the blaze while puffin on a cigarette. But you do have to take into account that normal users would grab a lappy over a desktop any day so more power to them.
