Gigabyte Announces Low-priced Tablet PC

Gigabyte announced that a new low-priced tablet PC, the M912V. This ultra-portable and affordable tablet PC has a 8.9" frame has a screen that swivels 180 degrees. It has a screen resolution of 1280 x 768 px. The LCD is backlit to enhance battery life. At the heart of this is a 1.60 GHz Intel Atom processor, 1GB of DDR2 memory, a 160GB SATA HDD, 802.11b/g wireless, Bluetooth, and a 1.3 megapixel webcam. Connectivity includes 3 USB 2.0 ports, 56k modem, NIC, an ExpressCard slot, and an internal expansion slot for HSDPA.

With so much packed, the M912V tipps the scales at only 2.86 lbs. Gigabyte's new netbook will be available for purchase later this month with a price tag of $699.

For students, this means slightly more practicality than carrying a Eee PC. This is how Gigabyte pwned both ASUS and MSI who, in their own battles, reached a $600 price-point with their 'low-cost' ULPCs (that aren't tablets either).

Dang my niece has it good in me being so nice. I had to carry around a 10 pound behemoth when I was a teacher. She's been studying on difference lappies for the last 2 weeks, hell I don't even do half that much research when buying a car. The more I see the stuff she's looking at the more I want it myself - even though I have no use for it

Lately she's been looking at the Eee's. I think this will suit her better, but maybe that's just me saying that cause I want it

It suprises me how many manufacturers still Include a 56k modem in their laptops. how many people actually still use that??

some of you might say "yeah but business people i.e bankers, accountants or Solicitors might while out of country at meetings"

well if your willing to spend a fortune on coffee from Starbucks or an other Coffee shop then im sure that if a hotel only had a 56k dial up you would be re-booking at another hotel which serves you a hamburger on a gold plate with sliver cutlery each time you connect your laptop to their in hotel Wi-Fi network...

so thats no excuse. & in the event that your hotel does not have a netlink theres always a few Internet cafe's around that will allow you to bring your own laptop in & set up shop there for the next few hours at very very little cost.....

with the space they save without having a 56k module there they could put something else more useful there such as a better Micro sound card then the crappy realtek shit they usually have.

one could say its like they are still releasing/building laptops with a built in floppy drive....

Pfft 56k??? please get with the times....

lol, doesnt having the High Speed Packet Access socket/slot kinda defeat the purpose of having the 56k modem? :roll:

either way, personally i dont really care, modem or not, thats a crazy price for what ur getting imo, id buy one

they put the plain ole eeepc to shame :toast:

The 56k modem and the sound card is actually one chip these days for laptops..., so if you have the sound, why not put the modem for the hell of it.

Hey -- America, with all its resources, has one of the worst rates of broadband access in the developing world. 56k modems are still used more widely than you'd think here -- it's sad but true. A lot of people in America will buy this laptop -- probably as much (or at least near) the entire EU as a whole. Therefore, they still put a modem in it.

56k modem is for sending / receiving faxes.
