Xbox 360 Games Could run off the Hard-drive

Soon, you will be able to slash load-times of Xbox 360 games by a nifty feature update that allows the console to cache the game on to the hard drive. You will need the game disc in the drive to be able to play the game as a counter-piracy measure, just that the console won't read resources from the disc, but instead from the cached data on the hard drive. In a way this also means improved sales for the new 60GB variant, since hard-drive space is 'more-the-merrier' now on, you can cache as many games as your hard drive can take. This was announced by Microsoft during a press-conference at E3.

Even with the 120GB 360, space is going to run out fast. Hell, my 60GB PS3 is already out of space with just game demos on it. I don't keep any media on my hard drive.

Yes, but the PS3 doesn't store the whole game on the drive, just the most used parts and most games don't even use this feature.

This is like the 360 being more like a PC now then. basically installing the game onto your HDD like PC games do. This will greatly reduce the noise form the 360 espeically for launch consoles like mine as the drive is noisier than the fans! Maybe it will reduce some heat too! wonder how long it takes to copy it across? you also know what this means You could have double disc games to get round the DVD limitation. Two resource discs, but only one in to satisfy the anti-pircacy. but 20gb of data is sitting on th HDD.

thats not entirely correct! it installs the disk onto the hard drive so that it plays off the hard drive instead of disk. you need the disk for piracy issues but it dosnt spin.

Faster load times and less noise due to no disk usage. Basically its choice not mandatory.

Some games require the hard drive like football manager series and oblivion.

There are other features being added like A WHOLE NEW DASHBOARD no more blades a whole new layout and style, also you get a 3D avatar character for your gamertag, streaming movies from some website, also as far as i know you can do a live party and all play the same games ect, there is a source on the engadget page if you go into that it tells you all.

I didnt know that using engadget as a source was allowed? isnt it a rival tech website?

I sent in my own news using the xbox press release site as a source but i guess they already got onto it.

The original Xbox allowed games to store things on the "cache" drives (x, y, z). Halo/2 and Doom 3 are some of the biggest examples, but most games did it in some form or another. I actually really liked this feature and I was sad to see its disappearance as it obviously couldn't happen if some people had hard drives while others didn't (on Xbox 360).

So basically the executable/game loader is still on the dvd, but the data such as graphics (textures/models) are gonna be on the hard drive. I wonder what the set limit per game. I doubt MS will allow a full disk backup on the hard drive...for the sake of drive space.

So, it's not optional, now your X360 HAS to look gay to use it's full potential. And I really doubt that there will be an option to use the old "blade" system. I like the new dashboard, was getting board of the old blade system, it looked dated. I wonder what happens to the themes that I have purchased, or whether they only work on the guides blades. Do you reckon that this main dashboard will be customizable?

But still gay people defo. I hope MS reads stuff like this and decides to make the 3d avatars optional. When I first read it and thought of 3D avatars, I was thinking literally that, not stupid cartoon people! Now maybe if they sweetened the deal by adding game characters for avatars. Then it would be cool.

Well, if you use the old dashboard that means no LIVE - you must have the latest updates, or it says you can't use it. So,everything that you have purchased before - themes, gamerpcis, and stuff related to the looks and the customization goes straight to hell - deleted. You just loose it. Another reason to feel that M$ f**ked us. And they did.

Wait, so the Xbox360 finally got the features that the PS3 has, so now there is no reason to buy a PS3? What reason is there to buy an Xbox360 then if the PS3 has the same features? By your logic, there is no reason to buy an Xbox360 either.

Oh, and where is the Xbox360's Blu-Ray support? User replaceable hard drive? Non-Crap controllers? The ability to use any Bluetooth heatset I want, and not be forced to use Microsofts?

I would really like something like this - in normal games normal/3d avatar of a character or just a classic gamer pic. When you go to Live PARTY or 1vs.100 etc., media that requires the cartoony gay avatar, ONLY then shiow it, don't force it on us! M$, some of your customers are not retards like you think!

Exactly, the way I see it, the only MS would make me look forward to the upgrade is if you can have 3d avatars of in game characters, and like you said only use cartoony ones on certain games (have two avatars like you have now, one personal [gay one] and one gamertag one [3d char].

In terms of the content, MS either need to give us a refund on our points, or give us free upgrades to new themes and 3d character avatars, if they listen and do that.

If you are listening MS, please do 3d game characters for avatars!!!!

sure ive explained this a zillion times to other people im not going to explain why xbox hard drives are not user replaceable and why they dont allow blue tooth headsets

INFACT see the xbox 1 you could replace the drive on it as well but that meant you could put boot loaders and linux on it and play pirate xbox 1 games and do all sorts of illegal stuff Microsoft didnt want you to do

you know what im fed up! keep your crappy ports that run at horrible frame rates and keep your metal gear solid 4 because if a console (it is designed as a console first and foremost) has only i exclusive and one decent game OUT NOW then its a waste of money

it basically tries to be a pc BUT FAILS, it has mouse and keyboard support, allows to change the hardware to a certain extent, you can run linux on it, it has media functions like a pc, it has a zillion other things a pc can do better

i actually prefer the xbox 360 pads very comfortable and has grip and HAS PROPER TRIGGERS unlike the ps3 pads r2 and l2

ps2 pads i had just broke after a year actually started to come apart and the analoughe nad R1 and L1 buttons becaame wobbly

so i take it since the ps3 pads the same its like that TOO
also the ps3 pad has no weight

HOW THE HELL CAN RUMBLE WORK IF ITS GOT MOTION OR TILT OR WHATEVER CONTROLS
i mean wouldn't the rumble make you car or whatever move about and simple turning it off just for it to rumble dosnt work either because if your titling the pad it suddenly turns off for a second to rumble you might loose control having to quickly move to using the analogues
