AMD isn't officially supporting it because it would be a bad for business. It would lead to CUDA/PhysX becoming the only (de facto) GPGPU/Physics code, and would "flush" what AMD is doing with FireStream and Havok Physics down the toilet.
Either way, the progress of [graphics & physics] technology is going to be interesting this coming year.
