Problem is for me, wait it out and get one, or just get a E8400 now and be done with it. Whats the known performance increase? 15% increase in performance I heard clock for clock? Problem is, that I would have to spend $120 more, as the 2.66ghz one is suppose to be released at around $300. :shadedshu

Actually considering the outrageous markup that manufacturers often attach to new products (sometimes even economy products) and the way Intel slashes the prices of older inventory (I’m a little surprised the Q6600 is still around) you might be looking at a bigger differential then the $120 you calculated.

Still if the LGA1366 socket has a longer expected lifespan then the LGA775 socket then I’m ready to move on. DDR3 is also starting to reach palatable price points.

I think this delay might be linked to nVidias green light on SLI on the intel platform.. last minute architectural changes

Clock for clock doesn't seem like a huge difference. From the stuff we've seen it looks like intel is more gearing up for very efficient mult-threading. Now, seeing as there isn't much software out there right now that takes advantage of multi-threading, I'm wondering how relevant nehalem will be, especially in just a couple of months. By next year I would expect multi-threading to have taken a bigger hold, and ddr3 prices to be down, but as soon as September? This may speed up those processes, but w/o both of those things happening I can't see this as being worthwhile that soon.

Actually considering the outrageous markup that manufacturers often attach to new products (sometimes even economy products) and the way Intel slashes the prices of older inventory (I’m a little surprised the Q6600 is still around) you might be looking at a bigger differential then the $120 you calculated.

Socket 775 has been around for a bit.

It's not a delay, it's a "prelay." I'm wondering if perhaps intel has caught wind of something over at AMD, and are pushing to get their's out first.......

":ohwell: Can I have your physics assignment? You've to submit it today, I'm collecting."

expected responses:
";) hey champ, come back tomorrow" , " I didn't finish it yet" , " s**** off bta!"

Anyways, it's pointless launching Bloomfield with no boards ready. Paper launches before schedule harm sales of existing products.

are you kidding if they launch before the boards come out and they dont sell well intel could drop the price before we ever get boards

You obviously forget that Intel is interested to sell their own brand motherboards in the first place. They don't care if their competition (that is Asus, MSI, Gigabyte...) isn't fast enough to deliver final boards when Intel launches the Nehalem. Further IF Intel decides to prepone the launch date they will make sure there are enough compatible boards for the interested. Besides if you happened to watch the Computex with care you could see a lot of motherboards based on X58 being in the final stages. To me it looks like there will be a lot of boards of different brands available.

From Intel's POV it's pointless. People wouldn't want to buy LGA 775 parts, wait for boards. They won't drop prices of these new chips either, since it looks a paper launch to me.

Chances are they will launch with a "first party" Intel branded motherboard in the vein of "Bad Axe", etc. I am not 100% convinced that this preponement is true, but if so, I will be really stoked.

not a bad idea, thats actually got good chances of happening.

If intel do the launch with their own enthusiast mobo ahead of schedule, it could well be rather popular.

I never had any problems with my intel boards, except that one time one of the printed wires for the AGP slot exploded, but probably due to static (long story)
