Western Digital has released a new model of its fastest performing "prehistoric" VelociRaptor hard drives. The new backplane version is specifically designed for 3.5-inch drive-based servers, PC and Mac computer enthusiasts and professional workstations that require the need for a backplane structure. "We designed the latest version of the WD VelociRaptor due to the increasing amount of systems that require a backplane mounting system. We have had overwhelming demand of our WD VelociRaptor as it provides enthusiasts with the computing speed and capacity they thirst for," said Tom McDorman, vice president and general manager of WD's enterprise solutions storage business unit. "The new WD VelociRaptor further demonstrates WD's commitment to the enthusiast and server market by delivering the greatest performance, compatibility, and reliability of all SATA hard drives currently on the market." Except the backplane mounting system, the updated VelociRaptors remain the same in specs which include: the 2,5-inch hard drive itself, 300GB of space, 10,000 rpm, SATA 3 Gb/s interface, 16MB cache and 1.4 million hours MTBF. WD VelociRaptor model WD3000HLFS and WD1500HLFS are available through select resellers and distributors. Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the WD VelociRaptor 300GB and 150 GB are $319.00 and $229.00 respectively.

i was waiting for the 150GB version of the veloci, but now going with an OCZ Core Series 64GB drives instead.

The SSDs are in a prepping stage, don't buy them yet. They may seem fast, but that speed only occurs at the most rarest times, especially data transfer. The VelociRaptor series is by far the fastest hard drive series on the market to date, along with the Samsung F1 drives second, and the Barracuda 11s third. The SSDs go a bit faster, but in the most rarest situations, the average speed on those things are usually 60-70 MB/s.

The latentcy vs a SSD by comparison is terrible on any mechanical harddrive save the newer SAS drives in the 4ms range.

Stop wasting your money and buy a SAS drive.

The data i've seen shows the SSD drive to be superior to the veloci, in some areas it is not as great as i expected but is still quite impressive. And the 64gb version is cheaper that the 300GB raptor, though obviously more expensive per GB. However, It is true that they are not yet quite mature and need to be developed futher.

I didnt know they were new SAS drives out. Problem with them is that they require expensive controller cards, a good card is prolly gonna cost me more than an SSD.

How about the WD SE16's?

I have both 2xSE16's and 2x F1's in RAId 0 and the SE16's perform faster. Although, the F1's I have are 640GB (dual platter) and SE16's are single platter (320GB)....the average read is around 30MB faster.
