With Intel gearing up to cease manufacturing its 386, 486, 960 and other processors of yore, one eBayer is offering technology enthusiasts the chance to own almost the entire collection of the chip giant's microprocessor products.

Well, not all of 'em - some are still sitting in folks' PCs, after all - but rather one of each type, many of them highly esoteric but "historically significant", in the words of the seller, who claims to have spent eight years putting the collection together. The selection runs from the original 4004 through to the Pentium 4.

The array is described as a "museum grade, quality collection". According to the seller, "the chips have been chemically cleaned for the absolute best possible cosmetic appearance while being displayed. This collection would make a fantastic educational tool for a university or technical school."

The whole collection can be bought for $2500, plus shipping. Ebay link here.

I wouldn't buy it but that isn't a bad price.

WTF? Intel still makes the 386!?! WHY!?

Wow, half of those look like old bios chips.

wow, people really do have alot of spare time!

I have seen routers with AMD 186 microprocessors, so they can make 386 today peacefully

Do you reckon it would break this guy's heart if someone bought the collection and overclocked them one by one until they fryed?

Edit: I like the strange intel dolls

This isnt that impressive... the only chip worth any money is the ONE pentium 4 chip, and the intel 4004.

no, thats amazing. in 20 years, that collection will be 100 times more valuable. and the old 286s and 386s are still damn useful... what d'y'think NASA runs?

rofll @ nasa, the people flying into space, where nobody else goes, a multibillion dollar company, and they use 386's? wth...

my comp>all of nasa's

well, actually its just the space shuttles that use 286s AFAIK... NASA itself most probably has massive CRAY or SGI mainframes and such hotness :)

Yes that is true, NASA still uses 386 for space shuttles, because any newer microprocesor wouldnt survice space conditions. 386 are very reliable and have very small power consumption.

btw. I have a half of this collection at home (the older half). Do you think I can sell it for $1000?

I have my own collection of few cpus and all is working in their own computers (the oldest is the 8086 computer with a 5mb harddisk), while once in a while i turn on the 80286 with 1mb ram to play some old dos games :)

Oldies, but goldies ;)
Two years ago, I had with my friend a network of 4 PCs with 486 and pentium processors. It still offers a lot of fun playing Duke 3D, Blood, Doom and games like these over LAN.
