Microsoft is glad to report that sales of its Xbox 360 have gone double, after Microsoft last week lowered the price of the console. After cutting the price in US by as much as 29 percent retailer sales have risen 100%, some even report a 600% rise in the sold Xbox 360s compared to the previous week. Let me remind you that Microsoft slashed the price of the Xbox 360 Arcade unit last week to US $199 (down from $279), while the Core or Premium edition is now selling for US $299 (down from $350) and the Elite unit for US $399 (down from $449). After the Sept. 5 price reduction, the Xbox 360 Arcade is now also the cheapest current generation home console on the market. "We are thrilled to be the first next-generation console on the market to reach USD 199, a price that invites everyone to enjoy Xbox 360," said Don Mattrick, senior vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft.

I thought the Wii was the first console to go under $199 and have a game bundled.

Sold my "sexbox" a few months ago, the guy rang literally 2 weeks after buying it and asked if i had the original receipt as the red ring of doom had struck it down. talk about timing haha

I would deffo consider getting another one if the price dropped that low here in the uk - still approx $400 here.

You know, this just proves that I am not just an anti-Microsoft shill -- I really don't have a problem with the XBox 360. I think it's a great system for a great price.

(Having played GTA IV for a month or so on my brother-in-law's borrowed XBox 360 perhaps has softened my attitude towards Microsoft, at least where gaming systems are concerned.)

Alright here we go... First of all $400 for a core system is worth it compared to a Wii with 1/5 the power for $250. Second, hopefully this will finally start up the need-for-next-gen-hardware and get rid of the Wii as a competitor, I was so tired of hearing about dressed-up Gamecube hardware beating everything in sales, and to some of the most ignorant people, being claimed "winner" of the current generation console wars.

So this $200 price is way more that worth it, and hopefully cut off demand to all those people blind to the Wii's cheap gimmicky features. I don't even want to get started on this thing, I'd have a novel as a post, but I'm glad to see sales are finally turning around, although it sucks that next-gen hardware prices had to be slashed to compete with that pos from Nintendo

The wii did win the "next gen/old gen" console war. It wasn't about who had the best graphics or the biggest lineup. The truth is the WII made the most sales, made the most money and despite its, 'poor graphics' that is due to the developers, the wii had alot of potential for graphics if the developers cared.

I don't think there's a way to win console wars if it's not even half-way through this generation's lifespan but alright. And exactly like the Gamecube, of course people will buy it and play something like Wii sports for a week or two, but as I've seen with the Gamecube too, after that initial amazement those cheap systems end up dusty on a shelf in some ugly cabinet under the household's cheapest TV. But somehow it "won" and somehow it's still beating everything in sales.

The console race is decided by who gets to 10 million sales. That's what I had been told anyway. Either way I didn't get a wii  I got an xbox but it has too many generic shoot, kill and rape noobs theme ... cod4, army of two etc.
