As a former journalist I can't think of a more depressing environment in which to be operating right now, short of maybe covid hospital staff. Glad I got out when I did.

We're too self-aware for our own good, but not self-aware enough to save ourselves. I have pulled back, myself... carefully and quietly. I just watch in awe. Find my joy and nourish that, away from the noise. You lose perspective staying in the stream too long. It's like a drug, and it affects just about everyone.

I see a pattern in how all of this information is dealt with. There is a tendency for one to feel lost in it - and though the reasons differ via personal gut morals, it's the same overall experience for everybody. It's a scary feeling... like, existentially terrifying. That's exactly the trap that leads people to favor a sense of belonging or sanctuary over reason, while only really creating more hostile points.

We do it to each other and ourselves simultaneously. It's quite sad to watch. We built this shit. I think it ultimately would take people, over time, becoming willing to reassess their relationships with sources for information, ideology, and community. Lets all sort out where we're at with this, at least. The time for that talk will come. In every person is a tipping point for misery and stagnation.

Every time I see a claim of 'x' that seems counter to the majority view, I ask for a source. Often that source is given but once it is investigated, it usually becomes apparent the claim has been taken completely out of context. This is how misinformation is spread.

Not by some bogus crackpot conspiracy but by using numbers without context. Misinformation is best handled with logical discussion, despite how illogical the other view tends to be. Unfortunately, many people have chosen a side and if that side isn't allowed to agree with your view, they'll just dig in their heels and the claims start to verge toward conspiracy.

The internet is blessing and curse. That's the long and short of it. Every possibility we create requires a learning process and boundaries that keep us sane. Note how crypto fits in here, lol - its yet another escalation of information overload. And we even parrot how its going to make things simpler instead.

@robot zombie well put, as ever.

Like everything it is opportunity in disguise , it might be a time to develop an app called Bulshit Detector just like antivirus programs appeared when they become must. Or just get old ,that works too :D

That detector will never make it to market because it will always get overloaded with bullshit and explode

@witkazy count me out. They tried that. It became "fact checkers." Now people think Fact Checkers are biased...

I've even been told Snopes.com is no longer trustworthy...

It can't be fixed or stopped, as best I can see. You can't really choose your own facts, and there is no way to "research" something into reality, but that is what a good portion of the population insists on doing.

I don't know. I think people have to burn out eventually. To me a lot of the thinking that spawns this stuff is spiritually corrosive. It will take everything from you. Like, it's just not a sustainable way for a person to... exist. Your world becomes soup.

We are fully in the information era... kinda reminds me of the Victorian era. Lots of funky new tech that nobody really understands and whackadoodles galore.

The problem is, the deeper they get in, the more expensive it becomes for them to admit they were ever wrong. So they don't.
