Buffalo is out with its SSD-based portable drives. The Buffalo SHD-PE family products resemble most portable hard drives in form, while offering better access times and durability compared to mechanical drives. Measuring 98 (W) x 57 (H) x 13 (D) mm, and weighing 62 g, the SHD-PE comes in capacities of 32, 64, and 128 GB. It relies on USB 2.0 for power and connectivity, and offers transfer-rates of 39.8 MB/s. It comes with three color options - black, red, and white. The 32, 64, and 128 GB versions are priced at US $117, $231, and $407 respectively. Sales are expected to start later this month.

Am I mistaken, can you not already buy standard (and much smaller) flash drives that also run off of USB2, and hence share pretty much the same performance limits, with the same capacity's , for less?

*digs around for some price lists...*

32Gb Flash drive (Transcend) is $80 or less...
64Gb is around $180.....

Patriot Xporter retails at $370 for 128gb (newegg)
CORSAIR Voyager GT 128GB for $399 (newegg)

So really these are just bigger and more expensive? - perhaps the magic is in better read / write before failure?

Very useful for "database" type data... where a flash stick will come nowhere near the speed of a SSD over USB for random read/write.

Performance and longevity. RED is a good idea so that it isnt left on tables but TAKEN AWAY SECURELY by the user.

USB 2.0 SSD way to go :wtf:

My thoughts exactly.

Yes, the random read/write will be "better" using this "SSD". But if you're doing random read/write on an external storage device, you're doing it wrong.
