After months-long DirectX 11 extravaganza by AMD, it seems to be time when NVIDIA declares itself to have a competing GPU, based on its spanking-new Fermi GPU architecture. The GeForce Fermi 100 (GF100) is promising to take over the legacy built by its ancestors, the G80 and GT200, to become yet another monster high-performance silicon which will reignite competition in the upper-quadrant of the market. We look at what NVIDIA is putting on offer, before we get to test NVIDIA's assertions.

yea those slides are nice and all, but heres the problem, You can make the best gpu in the world with the richest feature set ever created....but if no game studio decides to put it to any real use....whats the point in it all? Last time i checked studios are still cranking out DX 9 ports from console :shadedshu

What resolution was that test run at for the 60 seconds?

I'm pretty sure that with those numbers it was done at 1680x1050. The scores provided for the 5870 by nvidia match my results with a stock 5870 at that resolution.

I was nosing around the other articles that were put out and every one of them pretty much give the same vibe as concluded here. While I give them kudos for what they've done everything that has come out so far on this particular chip points to the following:

a. It will be a BIG chip having a pretty massive die size

b. It will be a HOT chip considering all of the power it's packing on-die.

c. That low and mid range cards will be MIA for months after the high end part is released.

I don't know about some of you but this has GeForce FX redux written all over it even down to the lagging low to mid range product launch after the high end card was released. Even if they do manage to hit the performance numbers they're looking for they will still have a card that produces as much heat as a 5970 if not more and cost just as much. At which point all AMD has to do is drop the price on their stuff and NVIDIA is stuck with a high end card for anywhere between 4 to 8 months that will only sell to a limited market until the other stuff comes out.

There is a good chance that I could be missing something on this and may be wrong. But with the amount of delays that have occurred combined with everything else says that's highly unlikely.

Finally, numbers. If the GF100 is really a power hogger, and those numbers are accurate, then 5970 is still king of the single card. However, I think the GF100 looks very promising, hopefully the price is competitive.

Well, lets just hope nVidia keep pushing the "Way Its Meant To Be Played" program on developers. If they do, we can hope that more games would implement the new tech found on GF100.

I'm skeptical about this card. I really think its going to be bloody expensive, and I'm worried about the temperatures its going to be outputting - so far, these are the biggest downsides I've heard about this chip...

But for us enthusiasts, this isnt a flaw.... this is just a challenge for us to make it cooler...

Edit: I noticed you put the transistor count at 3,2billion, up from the original 3 bil. Is this confirmed?

I definitely hope this will level the field and bring prices down.
New features, which for the most part are DX11 features and therefore implemented in ATi's 5000 will mean that now developers will have no reason not to incorporate them into their projects.

Impressive architecture, but above evrything, it has me wondering one thing. If GeForce and Tesla use exactly the same GPU, HOW in hell have they disabled the chip on the Tesla card in order to have 448 SPs???

i just think why should we beleive what nvidia say, just because they say the GF100 does 43 fps we wont actually know untill launch. it wouldnt be the first time nvidia has just claimed something and we have found it wasnt golden. no one has seen or used this card, so im not gona beleive some babble they come out with.
