Thank you for the picture, however I am trying to find out which wires go to the two wires on the adapter, I have tried just the red and black and it does not start the fan, and I am worried if I try any of the other two wires I will mess the unit up altogether !

I just tried using just the black and red, works fine; is your adaptor 12V DC or AC?

If the adapter you're using is from a router, lamp, etc one of the cables should be fully black and the other have white lines, the black one is ground so it goes to the black wire of the fan.

Are you sure there's power there? If it's a simple 12V adapter and it only has one red and one black lead it should work.

BTW, make and model on the fan? You say "high speed fan", is it like a fancy fan with cool circuitry or is it just a faster 12V fan?

Pic of, or model of fan would be helpful. The datasheet may have the official pinout (and startup current) specs.

Typically, a 4-wire 12VDC fan is wired as Shrek posted, and will run 100% speed when +12V and Gnd are provided.

Of note: If it's a particularly powerful fan, it may be exceeding the Amperage output of your adapter. Some SMPSs will also 'overcurrent trip' from initial amp-load of the motor starting.
