You know, something like this would be great to stick into a retro PC gaming box especially those running either DOS 6.22 and/or dual booting with 98SE. I'd love to be able to get rid of the rather ancient and slow WD 20 GB drive I've got in my retro gaming PC box right now and this looks like it might fit the ticket.

Any news on cost for these?

SSDs for old stuff... smart, practically no competition in the 1.8" PATA department, if the prices follow

no it doesnt. IDE and SATA 1 are basically the same speed.

IDE is not bi directinal iirc

also IDE capps out at around the 100mbps mark... even if it says its 133, not sure why but iv never hit over that with IDE.

sata 1 is 150mbps and dosnt suffer the draw backs from pata, but its still a good idea to bring SSD's to PATA for older devices,

there for the LATENCY NOT TOTAL THROUGHPUT.

0.1 ms @ 100mbps is a lot better then 15ms @ 133mbps. or even 250mbps.

(unless its a large file only server :p)

IDE is not bi directinal iirc

It kinda has to be, or you wouldnt be able to write to drives lol.

also IDE capps out at around the 100mbps mark... even if it says its 133, not sure why but iv never hit over that with IDE.

because very few HDD's even today, are faster than 100MB/s? It also used to share with the other devices on the PCI bus, which had a 133MB/s cap. Not a big deal on modern systems where everything is on PCI-E 1x lanes.

sata 1 is 150mbps and dosnt suffer the draw backs from pata, but its still a good idea to bring SSD's to PATA for older devices

what drawbacks? bigger cables?

there for the LATENCY NOT TOTAL THROUGHPUT.

0.1 ms @ 100mbps is a lot better then 15ms @ 133mbps. or even 250mbps.

Yes, IDE has higher latency. Not much tho. its still not going to affect performance too much.

Oh and please dont confuse Mb/s and MB/s... mbs isnt even a measurement. (millibits lol)

i wasnt confusing them, just not bothering to put in the "correct" abriviations.

i figured people would work out what i ment. MBps

a couple of the drawback of IDE cables would be,
higher minumum latency
degraded perfromance due to interfrance from other devices...
unidirectinal
more often then not you could not set the drive above 66MBps due to interfirance or errors.

Sata wasnt needed for the incress in bandwidth, but the incress in reliabilty and reduction in latency.

even with all those draw backs, i still agree it is a good idea to make some slower "bandwidth wise" SSD's for use with PATA devices, windows 95 on a SSD ... i wish.

I wonder why SATA cables can't connect two drives on one cable like IDE did...

I wonder why SATA cables can't connect two drives on one cable like IDE did...

they made port multipliers to cover that, instead of daisy chaining the drives. makes the drives cheaper since they dont have to try coordinating with each other, the multiplier does it for them.

Ah, I suppose that's better than worrying about jumpers and such.

Ah, I suppose that's better than worrying about jumpers and such.

problem is that cause it was made optional to the sata II spec, its kinda wonky... they dont work on intel SATA chipsets for example. (they do work on AMD, silicon image and Jmicron, so long as its in AHCI mode, however)
