Sorry to bother you guys but opening this topic cause I couldnt get a good answer about my ssetup.

Currently using b660 mobo with 12400 f but I had some saved money to upgrade to 12600k with 4070 ti super but when I search forums everyone says go b690 ddr4 instead of z790 ddr4
What is the real diffrence ?
There is also a price diffrence in my country betweenn b and z 690 around 100-150 €

Thank you for your time

pretty sure z790 is ddr5 as i have a asus tuf z790 board and it uses ddr5.
edit: Had a look there is z790 that support ddr4 so make sure one you are getting does else if you are gonna use same memory

DDR4 Z790 MBs exist, but not many as Z690. Also Z790 for DDR4 can have better support for higher frequency memory.

I would say if your sticking to 3200-3600 speed, that aspect won't matter what you pick. But for PCIe slots, m.2, USB, etc will change for B and Z series.

What B660 board do you currently own and what country are you located?

Currently using MSI B660m-A and I live in Turkey
That board has sufficient VRM's to handle a 12600K / 12600KF. The only reason you would want a Z series board for those cpu's is if you needed more PCIe lanes. Just make sure you have a decent cpu cooler.

I've managed to find a really cheap z690 mobo and d12600k price iss less thten 250$ for both. Also currently ussing Noctua NH d15 cooler with ddr4 cl 16 3200 ssticks

This 2 I can find best other than that prices going up like 150 $ in my country

Other options

If you are buying another motherboard and RAM kit, why not just go DDR5? It doesn't make sense to put any money on this platform otherwise.

Already bought them ages ago can't return them now

No need to spend, then. You will get nothing out of a 12400F on a Z790 board that you don't already get on the B660. That chip is locked, and upgrading to Z790 without DDR5 would make your machine largely unsuitable for a high end Raptor Lake down the line.

You should probably just keep that money in this case and save for a complete platform swap including CPU down the road.

Think I put wron info for title I am usingn b660+ 12400f atm
what I bought was z690 + 12600k
also whenn I tesst my kitss they are crappy d die corsairs

Hi, you should post which motherboard model # you intend to purchase so we can assist you.
I would say do a Z series motherboard but can't really offer advice unless I know which models you are talking about. There are Z series which use DDR4. You don't really save much money doing B series over Z series. If you already had the B series you should just put the 12600K into it and return the Z.

I think I made a mistake and put wrong title as Z790. My setup is 12600k with msi z690 tomahawk wifi ddr4. Currently trying to pick rams and I am sttuck with;

XPG ADATA DDR4 32GB 3600-18 K2 Spectrix D35G RGB

Kingston HyperX FURY RGB 32 GB (2x16) 3600 MHz CL18 HX436C18FB4AK2

G.Skill Ripjaws V 3200 MHz 32 GB (2x 16 GB)

Kingston Fury Beast 32 GB (2x16) 3600 MHz CL18 KF436C18BBK2/32

G.Skill Ripjaws V 32 GB (2x16) 3600 MHz CL18 F4-3600C18D-32GVK

these are the besst options I can get. Other kitss are like 150$ more expenssive in my country.
