Plantronics today announced the new GameCom 777 Gaming Headset with virtual 7.1 surround sound, enabled by Dolby Headphone and Dolby ProLogic IIx technologies. I don't understand what's new about this headset. The audio dongle, maybe? Instead of the GameCom 777, I bought the much cheaper 377 and just bought a Sound Blaster X-Fi Go! to go with it if needed. Probably beats the generic Dolby dongle they provide.

I like mine, the voice communication is clear as a bell. If you compare them to decent speakers/some other headsets, they don't reproduce sound as well, but in game that I'm using voice communication in, they do have a great virtue.

I have two [of the 5.1 version of the GameCom 777] that a buddy and I used to game with regularly. Our experience was the opposite of yours—we found the sound reproduction to be good compared to other headsets in its price range. Mids and highs are surprisingly crisp and accurate. Bass suffers some clipping and drops off below 30hz but overall is more than adequate for gaming and for casual music listening. They are lightweight and comfortable. The mic attenuates ambient noise well (used them with Ventrilo and TeamSpeak). The simulated 5.1 surround sound is not perfect, but still useful in multiplayer FPS games. They're far from the best headset out there, but they are superb compared to others in their price range.

Currently, I'm stuck gaming in a loud environment (two Folding machines, an air conditioner, two room fans, eight video cards with fans at 100%, and a dozen 53dBA Delta fans within two meters), so I game with Etymotic ER-6i earbuds for their far superior isolation from ambient noise. Wearing the GameCom 777s over the top of them so I can use the mic works great.

When I have my new shop built (extremely low noise environment for recording studio plus computer components noise testing), it'll be back to Tritton AX Pros, which obviously have superior surround sound, but honestly, the quality of sound reproduction is not a lot different from the 777s. The Trittons handle bass better but the 777s are more crisp. This is what a buddy and I determined doing a blind experiment testing both back to back.

What confuses me is that these new 7.1s look the same and carry the same name as the 5.1 777s. Why not make it 787 or just something different to avoid confusion?

I wondered that at first too, but this is a 7.1 version of the GameCom 777—the old one is 5.1.

would be nice if they indicate how many "speakers" are inside that headphones, i still love my medusa 5.1 just for the great 5.1 sound and i still remember the early days with sound emulation which caused more clipping then any thing else

are there any true surround headphones with usb?
I guess that the main problem remains with usb sound cards that have 5.1 output, they are availible but a bit rare to grab for a decent price

I like it, it's an open ear design which means I can hear my wife telling me to do something while still delivering enough sound to make her think I cant hear her.

If that doesn't sell a pair then I dont know what will.

I bought a pair of Zalman SS phones quite awhile back and the spacial effect of the SS was simply not great.
Is it a lot better now?

Honestly I use the Dolbly effect about 85% of the time. Sometimes I want a full fledged sound, like metal or hard rock, that wont get 'spaced out' by the 7.1 effect.

How are the spacial effects in games? That's what seemed weak on the Zalmans.
I'm not really an audiophile, so stereo is fine with me for music. Actually, I rarely listen to music.
