12v2x6 *to* 3x8pin ?

Hi there all, I've got something to run by you :

I have an MSI A850G ATX3.0 (not an A850GL, not an A850G ATX3.1) and I want to power an XFX Mercury MagAir 9070XT OC, the PSU comes with a 12v2x6 to 2x8pin and two 8pin to 8pin+pigtail, the GPU has three 8pin connectors
I don't want to use the 8pin+pigtails (as that would look ugly asf) and while I could simply get three 8pin/8pin (that's my fallback plan if this turns out to be a definitive no), my brain geared up and cannot let the question go unanswered

Can I use a 4080/4090/5080/5090 connector backwards ? according to moddiy, no but their justification behind is that there's "only so many 12v pins to pull from on a 12v2x6" but I don't really think that's a legit answer
and if you want more than two 8pins from 12v2x6, they'll sell you a *dual* 12v2x6 to triple 8pin (not even quad 8pin ??) and tell you you need a a high end PSU with dual 12v2x6, which smells like bullshit to me (plus I'm not getting a 1650W PSU for a 340W GPU so...)

So I really wanna know what would happen if I were to get one of these, plug the 12v2x6 connector to my PSU and the 8pins to my PSU, would I be shorting something or...?

Why not just buy a graphic card with the nvidia power connectors. As far as i know there are a few 9070xt modells with that connector

The ones that will come with standard 8 pin connections will be female no? As in the picture you sent. So you plug into them 8 pin cables from PSU therefore you won't be able to plug them into GPU.
So the only ones left are vendor specific ones that are wired for specific PSUs and I would not use them, as they may be wired differently. Too much risk to send your card to the afterlife.

No, you cannot use the connector backwards. You bought the wrong GPU for your power supply, now you need to get some compatible cables if it didn't come with them (it should have)

only two of them do, one of them was unavailable entirely (couldn't find any listings for the Taichi), the other was extremely quickly out of stock (the Nitro+ was a *very* high demand, Sapphire did make a very damn good design), plus neither were fitting my build's aesthetic haha

I wouldn't do any backward stuff if i were you, those gpus, cables and whatnot can sometimes fail under optimal condition but hey, you do you.

Naaaah, I have dumb ideas but I'm not dumb enough to go through with something unless there's certainty about the outcome :thonk:

It was just a fun little side quest to go on while waiting on my GPU to get here, plus I really didn't know much about PSU cabling besides "risks of incompatibilities" so that was also quite informative !

Custom 8pin are stupid expensive so I'll just get some white bridged extensions from aliexpress and ziptie the shit out of the extra length of cable so it doesn't look completely ass with the panels on

Maybe some custom cables are a nice option with cable combs and nice coloured cables? I think for the 8 pin connectors there should be not an issue hopefully with 3rd party cables

Oh it's built already, I'm just working off my 98X3D's iGPU and been killing time while tuning the RAM, undervolting the CPU and adjusting fan curves but I'll definitely share pics for sure ! Idk if I'll post them here or another thread but I'll mention you here regardless of where they end up, it's quite pretty already, I'm just a tad disappointed I can't have the tower vertical due to... clearance issue is the short version, I'll put more with the pics =D

I think there are some MSI supplies which come with a 16-pin to 2x8-pin cable. Can't recall which models, and even less so if those cables would be compatible with your PSU, but what you want isn't out of reach.

I have that cable, I'm actually going to use it for the first two connectors and finish it off with one of the 2+6+pigtail while waiting on my bridged white extensions to come in

Shame 12v to triple 8pin isn't "doable" of sorts...
