Corsair Updates its Builder Series Power Supplies

Corsair, a worldwide designer and supplier of high-performance components to the PC gaming hardware market, today announced it has updated the Builder Series with new CX V2 models. The Builder Series CX V2 is the successor to the current CX family of PSUs, offering 80 PLUS certification and European Commission Energy-Related Product (ErP) directive compliance for guaranteed efficiency and low standby power consumption. The warranty on the CX V2 PSUs has been increased to three year s, one year longer than the original Builder Series models.

Builder Series CX V2 power supplies are designed for entry-level to midrange home system builds and desktop PC upgrades, providing a great value along with low noise and dependable, continuous power delivery.



"The Builder Series CX PSUs have been an integral part of Corsair's PSU business, offering home system builders and hobbyists Corsair quality and reliability at attractive prices," said Ruben Mookerjee, VP and General Manager for Components at Corsair. "Low cost of operation and trouble-free performance are highly desired features at every price point and today we are proud to offer even better efficiency and a longer warranty with the new Builder Series CX V2 PSUs."

Availability and Pricing
Corsair Builder Series CX V2 power supplies will be available in May from Corsair-authorized retailers worldwide. The CX600 V2 will be available for a US suggested retail price of $74 USD. The CX500 V2 will be available for $64 USD, and the CX430 V2 will be available for $49 USD.

They are based on different platforms. CX430, 500 and 600 are based on CWT's DSAII platform. CX V2 units are also based on DSAII. However, Corsair/CWT did some tweaks to the CX V2 units so that the CX V2 units could meet 80plus standard certification. All these units are group regulated.

GS units are another story. They are based on CWT's PSHII platform, a step higher than the DSAII platform. These units are independent regulated.

I noticed the new 430W with the 80+ cert on the box come in this really plain brown and black cardboard box like some of the Antec EarthWatts do. I wondered if they actually changed any specs or if the original would have met 80+ cert but for some reason never bothered.

According to one of Corsair's reps over at Jonnyguru:

V2 is the same platform just upgraded a few components so it would pass 80 Plus. The V1s were pretty close to 80 Plus, so it was only a bit of engineering work and some time to source enough components for mass production.

To be honest I can't believe Corsair would release any PSU that wasn't 80+ certified. Even if it is their cheap line. I just assumed it was and thought they forgot to put it on the box... as silly as that sounds.

I swear the older power supplies were listed on the 80+ cert site as passing 80+, but when I go there now I only see the new V2s. Over at JonnyGuru, his tests showed that the CX430 was just 1-2% short of 80+. I mean it is possible that under the testing situation of the 80+ cert site, they actually did manage to pass 80+.
