Watercooling a CPU or a graphics card is nothing out of the ordinary these days. With the arrival of Core 2 Duo, people have started to put emphasis on cooling their chipset too, in order to achieve higher overclocks. As if Thermaltake was expecting this, they released a new chipset block, the Aqua Brazing W3, designed to cool almost any chipset on today’s market.

One thing to note is that your setup could be affecting the results. @40C that temperature could be the final temperature of your idle cpu meaning that the liquid coolant is actually heating up the chipset at idle temperatures. One way to get better results is to set up a radiator between the cpu and the chipset thus to lower the temperature before it gets to the W3 waterblock.

It is possible that the CPU is indirectly heating up the chipset. However, adding a radiator between the CPU and chipset would have very little effect - there is a difference of less than 1C in the water in a water cooling loop.

good lord... halving flow rates and calling it not particularly restrictive? I'm sorry, but the difference in water block performance between .75 GPM (low, but still functional) and barely a third of a gallon per minute is massive, regardless of the loop. I don't care what waterblock you're using or what country you're in; .36 gpm is not functionally useable. Any block that can single-handedly halve the flowrates of an already-restrictive loop is positively monstrous.

@subject of CPU heating chipset: completely improbable unless your radiator is absurdly small with absurdly little airflow. Water-air deltas are usually in the 1-3 C range. CPU temp does not equate to water temp :)
