Celeno Communications, a leading provider of high-performance Wi-Fi chips and software for HD multimedia and data home networking applications, and Edimax, a leading manufacturer of networking solutions, today unveiled the first 802.11ac video bridge powered by Celeno's CLR2200 802.11ac chips. The high-performance video bridge extends the capabilities of the wireless network and enables the uninterrupted streaming of HD IPTV as well as data to multiple screens within subscriber homes while ensuring incomparable Quality of Service and Experience (QoS and QoE).

The video bridge supports 802.11ac with peak radio throughput of 866 Mbps, Transmit Beam Forming and Celeno's field-deployed OptimizAIR video-grade technology suite allows for a superior throughput/range and quality of service for video distribution in the home.

The bridge is used for two main use cases:
  • Dedicated home networking for IPTV streaming between broadband gateway and IP STB. The solution supports up to 8 HD streams and includes whole-home DVR use cases.
  • 802.11ac access point that externally connects to a legacy home gateway or router to enhance home coverage with 5GHz high throughput capabilities to stream HD video and provide internet access to portable devices in the home.
"While the 802.11ac standard was created for bandwidth-hungry applications, peak throughput is not the critical factor for video. Rather it is a matter of sustained throughput and Quality of Service," said Gilad Rozen, CEO of Celeno. "By incrementally applying Celeno's field-proven OptimizAIR technology over the 11ac standard, video and data streaming in the home will be a lot more robust, enhancing the user experience through QoS and stream balancing techniques as well as by minimizing packet errors per clients over time."

"Celeno has developed an expertise in the robust delivery of IPTV over 802.11n home networking. Applying their technology over the new 802.11ac standard results in a world-class video bridge solution with uncompromised performance," said Gene Renn, CEO of Edimax. "IPTV service providers and their OEMs will be able to offer next generation whole-home Wi-Fi networking for high definition video."
