Amped Wireless Debuts 802.11ac Long Range Wi-Fi PCI-E Adapter

Amped Wireless, the leading manufacturer of award-winning high power, long-range wireless solutions for the home and office, announced today the launch of the PCI20E High Power AC1200 Wi-Fi PCI-E Adapter. The PCI20E is a high performance Wi-Fi adapter designed to add long-range Wi-Fi connectivity and ultra-fast data transfer speeds to Windows desktop computers.

The PCI20E uses the latest 802.11ac Wi-Fi technology to provide maximum wireless speeds for demanding applications such as streaming HD video and online gaming. It features two high gain dual band antennas and four total amplifiers for up to 500 mW of wireless output power to provide maximum range and performance. In contrast, standard Wi-Fi adapters provide up to 100 mW of power and are not capable of providing extended range. The PCI20E provides up to three times the range of standard Wi-Fi adapters and is backwards compatible with 802.11a/b/g/n networks. It connects using PCI-E for easy installation into any computer case.

Well at least it's $20 cheaper then ASUS's solution, but still to expensive if you ask me. Hell even most PCI based internal solutions with 5GHZ on 802.11n are still to expensive. Yet the abundance of 5GHZ (Duel Band) routers easily out does just 2.4GHZ capable routers.

This is what we need. Not higher-gain antennae on the routers, but more transmit power on the adapters. That way, we can eliminate unwanted interference (with lower gain antennae) but still have the power for the clients that we do want connected to be heard. Now fingers crossed that the mandatory beam-forming from the 802.11ac spec actually works like it should to help make up for 5GHz decreased range and the universal use of omni-directional antennae on everything. I'd like good signal from one floor to the next; not just through walls. The rubber ducky aerials that they always use suck for trying to go upstairs.
