The Fairtrade Foundation, which was funded by the World Development Movement (WDM), placed a very interesting billboard in the game Second Life.

While it is not easily seen, at the bottom of the billboard is a very interesting counter. It counts how many preventable child deaths occur while people game away in virtual environments such as Second Life (one every three seconds). WDM's Peter Taylor said:
Millions of people are now spending more and more of their time in Second Life or similar virtual environments. We are here to remind them that they can't escape the problems of the real world.
The WDM founded the Fairtrade Foundation, which aims to help eliminate poverty and debt. The WDM is asking Second Life "residents" to remember reality and donate.

It is sad that so many people desire to escape from reality be it through video games, drugs or other means. The world is definitely on a downhill spiral that ain't looking good from many peoples perspective.

True, but video games are a HECK of a lot better imo, than using drugs or going out drinking, or being promiscuous (for lack of a more explicit term here)...

They truly are the entertainments of old mostly, for "Generation X" & prior ones!

I know, because I used to watch older kids go out & do more of that imo, than there is going on out there today, imo @ least, & screwing around? Oddly enough, the thing that creates life, KILLS or leaves you w/ diseases now that are LIFETIME (or shorten your lifetime for good)!

See, I was around when they were not around (PC's & game consoles), & @ least PC's are interactive, far moreso than T.V.'s are... & you learn a LOT more imo, or potentially can.

I think so, @ least, but I prefer communicating w/ others online above all else, & especially in forums... to learn more, & not just computer stuff! Filters & editorial action? Not as prevalent online, as there is on the TOOB (tv) imo.

At the very least (being positive here)? You surely learn 1 job related skill in demand everywhere now in this service economy & white collar environs: FAST TYPING!

:)

* You're very down on things my man, I am that way too @ times (more than I would like to be because the world often makes me sick @ times too)... '

STILL, things aren't as bad as they seem, & sometimes? Negative things are needed/necessary... to grow & learn from historical mistakes @ a personal level, as well as a world level.

APK

P.S.=> Try to cheer up... there's always SOME good, in the potential bad! apk

Games have greatly influenced the habits of "going out drinking" for many people...

Instead of going to a party, we all sit around the house drunk play WoW.

With the cost of the game and the cost of keeping ones pc up to a decent gaming level, how in the world do people rationalize paying a subscription fee to play their games? I will not buy/dl/install any game that requires me to continue to pay to play. That is ridiculous to me. How do people justify this?

I buy usually atleast 1 game a month.

A lot of them were PC games..... instead, I've been buying DS games with a one time 6 month subscription of $70 for WoW.

and I play WoW a lot to get my $70 worth :)

Diablo II was never pay to play.....

But then their servers started to go months without fixing critical flaws in the engine.

Very few other online games are capable of the content WoW provides in a game, letalone for free.....

Plus its a lot easier to get away with at work :)

I think games like this should have things like virtual cancer and virtual aids - that' the next level of realism that games need to reach.

They could just have a server dedicated to randomly picking people's characters to really mess with - that would be like real life. And they could add in a higher likelyness of being picked dependent on diet, stress levels, smoking, drinking, muchos sexxos etc... Hehehehe. Sleepy time.
