Also the google search shows that the first link to PNY's website has the same date as the one posted in the review....

You can buy the exact same aluminum casing off amazon for a few dollars and a new Crucial MX300 525GB M.2 Drive and get MORE storage for your money. compared to buying the PNY branded version.

Mmm, no, FreedomEclipse. I realize it is "months later," yet all I'm about to type holds true:

If you can specify "the exact same aluminum casing off amazon for a few dollars" then please, do so. I don't believe you can, as PNY Elite's aluminum case (59L x 39W x 9H mm) is so small, nobody else makes one that tiny, certainly not as an aftermarket enclosure. (What's in here, anyway? An mSATA? An M.2 2242?).

Also, the Crucial MX300 525GB you mention is an M.2 2280 (meaning it's 80 mm long) and will never be so small as to fit into a 59 mm case. Size matters with devices like this: they are meant to be highly portable and tucked into very small spaces. This device fits into one sleeve of a Case Logic USB-stick case (40 mm wide, the elastic on these comfortably holds one or two regular-sized USB thumb drives). THAT is small! (A 2280 would be at least 90 mm long, too long to fit in my case). The PNY: nope. Snug as a bug.

Your assertion of prices are off, too: the MX300 525 sets you back $150 at Amazon, yet even the cheapest M.2 2280 enclosure will set you back $15 to $25, let's say $20, making your solution cost $170, a per-GB price of 32¢. Amazon's ask-price of under $155 for the PNY Elite 480 matches that per-GB price, and in a MUCH smaller package. Sure, you'll get maybe 80% of the speed (400 MB/sec instead of MX300's 500 or so), but in less than one-half the volume. When small size is of the utmost importance, I'll make that tradeoff! We have a winner in the tiny-portable SSD race: the PNY Elite 480!

BTW, the runners-up: WD My Passport, Samsung T5 and Lexar SL100 are all MORE THAN DOUBLE the volume of the PNY Elite, and Shadow Mini and Glyph Atom Gold are TRIPLE...or just plain too darn big.
