Corsair MP600 PCIe Gen 4 M.2 SSD Pricing Out

It looks like SSD manufacturers such as Corsair will price some of the first M.2 PCIe gen 4.0 NVMe SSDs at a premium compared to existing drives that use PCIe gen 3.0. The company on the sidelines of Computex launched its MP600 series of high-end M.2 SSDs that take advantage of PCI-Express 4.0 x4 bus (64 Gbps) on the upcoming AMD "Valhalla" desktop platform, with up to 4950 MB/s of sequential read speeds. Ahead of their market availability alongside AMD Ryzen 3000 "Matisse" processors and AMD X570 chipset motherboards on July 7th, Cowcotland scored prices of the 1 TB and 2 TB models in Europe.

According to the French publication, the 1 TB variant of MP600 is priced at 249€ (0.24€ per GB), and the 2 TB variant at 449€ (0.22€ per GB), including VAT. To put these prices into perspective, the 960 GB variant of Corsair's current flagship SSD, the MP510, is priced at 160€, and its 1920 GB variant at 320€. Stateside, the Intel 660p 1 TB PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 NVMe drive is priced at $99.99 on Newegg, although it isn't generally counted as a premium SSD. Its 2 TB variant is priced at $192 on the same site. Nearly all client-segment PCIe gen 4.0 SSDs launched so far are built around the new Phison PS5016-E16 controller.

The MP510 has been "on sale" the last few days (weeks) for under 130 at stores like Amazon.de, Mindfactory and Alternate (+ shipping where applicable). I've been eyeing it as an upgrade to my Samsung 960 Evo when I change systems. Best price/performance PCIe SSD out there right now. Prices should fall quite quickly, especially since the performance uptick isn't incredbile compared to PCIe 3.0 version (and compared to SATA vs PCIe). Not a lot to justify that price increase, yet.

For gaming I can imagine this is overkill. However working with big databases this is hardly unnecessary and well worth the premium. This would cut my work time significantly, really looking forword to the pci-e 4.0 drives coming out soon.

Especially if we see the claimed 900k IOPS from some of them, that's 3 times the amount as e.g. 970 Evo Plus.

Everything about X570 is looking more and more unlikely for me to use, with the exception of the CPUs (If they are actually sold at MSRP). Hopefully though this will further drive down the price of PCI_E 3.0 NVME drives to the point where you can get a fully unleashed (Not the Intel 660P) for current low end prices. I am still dreaming of the day when all storage is NAND/FLASH in my rig. I would like to see how these drives perform though especially in RAID 0.

I just got a second hand info from a retail source, the X570 will be priced at US$ 450 upwards and that's too rich for me. After X5700XT pricing and now this... Somehow AMD build is getting pricier. It's good I guess for AMD financial, but I'm now at wait and see with Comet Lake.

PCI-E 3.0 nvme drives still work, you are in no way required to use this if you dont want need to. This is like saying that gaming pc prices are getting too ridiculous because the 2080ti is so expensive and just throw all other options out of the window. You can still use a Intel 660p with an x470 board and a ryzen 3600. So no build prices aren't getting out of hand, you are just not considiring all options and looking at the top end.

And corsair SSD sales is in no way good for AMD financially it's a different company.

GIGABYTE show some M.2 Gen 4.0 as well.
And they recognize complains on heatsinks from people who even fried their M.2 drives with Alphacool, Aqua Computer and EKWB heatsink.

I afraid that Gen 4.0 could be overpass very fast.
For people who no unlimited budget maybe is better to wait and see what Intel plan to do with their new platform.
To use Gen 4.0 or immediately to accept Gen 5.0

No reason AMD can't have gen 5 as fast as Intel - or possibly faster given they already have 4 in the market and likely learned a lot from it - maybe they will go straight to 6 on AM5.

The biggest issue may be the faster ones will use more power until newer chips are developed. Maybe gen 5 or 6 will actually need a 7nm or 6nm IO die and chipset to keep power/heat in check.

I thought it was made clear that heat is detrimental to the controller alone, not the memory chips ?

Best price to perf is IMO the EX920 (HP). Newegg has the 1TB for ~105 last I checked

Well, we don't have Newegg here in EU/Germany and the HP EX920 1TB is 175€ vs 126€ for the 960GB MP510. Goes to show you how different pricing is between continents. The whole group of 8 channel SM controller SSDs don't seem price competitive here in Germany vs the Phison ones. SM has good QLC controller SSDs though, if you just want "bulk SSD storage and good enough speed".

Yep , just like Asus and a few others including Corsair you have to pay the brand tax. I want to see what AData prices are because they seem to have a pretty good idea of how to make fast NVME storage, based on the fact I have not had one fail and they seem to forever be on MIR. So the plan is to get a Ryzen2 processor now, most likely the 3700x (it has the lowest TDP) (X470 Taichi has been sitting in the box) or save up some more and get the 3900x. The X570 is at least a year away for me. Wifi 6 is really what intrigues me.

Nicest heatsink on M.2 is WD SN750.
To bad EKWB sell pure crap from heatsink under own name and produce best possible model for WD.
Tragedy and people can't buy same model as installed on SN750
