AMD’s Final R600 Specs

The R600 is set to become AMD/ATI's flagship product as they move into the DirectX 10 era, and the company has now announced the final details of the R600 GPU. Although there are still contradicting reports concerning the existence of a 12" OEM version of the card, it is now clear that the first X2x00 series cards will be the X2900 XTX and the X2900 XT, with the XTX version being released on 30th March and the XT about a month later. The R600 will feature 700 million transistors (the X1900 series cards had 384 million), a 512-bit memory interface and support for both GDDR3 and GDDR4. The retail version of the X2900XTX is expected to have 1GB of Samsung GDDR4 memory and a vapour chamber cooler, with the XT using GDDR3 memory. Both cards will have native CrossFire support without the need for an external bridging cable or a master card, and HDMI will feature on both versions of the X2900.

Thats impossible. They cant start with X2*9*00XTX, the X2800XTX has to be first.

I reckon it could be something to do with the fact that NVIDIA will be releasing its 8900 cards at around the same time, so it doesn‘t sound slower.

Yep, thats why Microsoft named the XBOX2 the XBOX360, because the PS3 was on the horizon and they thought XBOX2 would sound like its much older technology and on par with the PS2........its all psychological

PS: I think thats why ATi/AMD keep the 'X' (Roman numeral for 10) on the beginning of the cards name (ie X2900XTX) because the card is then really called a '12900XTX' which is obviously 'higher' then 8900GTX....like I said its all psychological

Ridiculous numbering system. I mean, for anyone other than the enthusiasts on this forum, can you really expect a regular retail customer to remember X2954321XTXLL sort of rubbish? Better to get the feet back down on the ground with a simpler naming convention.

When I was at school, a friend and I used to compete with the number of decimal places of Pi that we could remember. But that was just for a bit of nerdy fun, before PC's came along.

But to expect RETAIL CONSUMERS to have to remember such a convoluted naming convention is just completely bonkers.

Not sure about your's but my case isnt "closed" with 4 120mm fans controlling the air inside of it.

If this truly will be the flaship card of this series, I think ATI is doing the right thing by calling it the x2900. The model below that would be called the x2800. Anything that comes out in this current generation that trumps the x2900xtx can be called 2950 or ztx or whatever.

agree with you;in 3-4 months i'll buy the 1950xt for 200$;i don't need dx10 card for dx10 games;i'm sure all games will work fine with "older" cards;let's wait untill they make the DX11 than we buy dx10 stuff.
