You can thank PCI_E 4.0 for that but this is not the first chipset fan I have seen. Unfortunately PCI_E 4.0 is very hot and needs some sort of active cooling.

There is one fanless X570 board out there, so that means it's possible to pull it off.
My eyes are on B550 though. So I'm good anyway

I do believe even the 550 boards will have it unless they only come with 1 NVME slot.

Mini ITX boards is the one category where I never expected a fanless version (unless you count watercooling). There is even less space for a decently sized heatsink than on mATX and up boards. But to be honest, I've set my SB fan to run at around 2200 RPM and keep the X570 at 56°C and it is not audible over the 120mm case fans that run between 600 and 800 rpm. Unless you run your case with 120mm fans below 400 rpm I don't think the SB fan will be an audible source for you.

Quite a nice little board, even if IO placement is a bit naff. My only criticism however is with all of those spare PCI-E lanes, finding a way to place more m.2 slots on board should be a priority. Maybe something like ASUS's excellent m.2 DIMM solution?

The Thunderbolt 3 port is a game changer as far as its integration with the board. I think the other ASRock boards required some odd expansion board to get it working. Now that it's all built in, people can actually use it in SFF cases. I would definitely give up a couple USB 3.0 ports to be able to get 40 Gbps bandwidth. You could likely get a port extender that would allow for all sorts of full speed USB 3.0 ports, or choose to use it with external NVMe storage for some very speedy file transfers.

I would have loved for some testing with the displayport in and how that works with the TB3 port putting out video. And also some tests to make sure that we are getting a full x4 PCIE 3.0 link.

That's because the review doesn't take into acount how lame Asrock is on the bios side .

TB3 is nice and all, but only four USB Ports are just not enough. If they could have fitted just two more USB 2.0 ports for mouse and keyboard, it would be fine for most scenarios.
Plus software - thats always an uncertainty with ASRock and Biostar for me.

That's one way to look at it. Another way would be: there are fewer components to generate heat in there and a single case fan will be way more effective than in a tower case.

I've been dying to do a SFF build, but I Need to be able to throw one of my Intel X550-T2 (I do a dual aggregated link for a 29Gbps connection) NICs into it to connect to my home 10GBase-T network, or even my Blackmagic design Decklink 4k 4x HDMI 2.0b capture card into it.

Yeah, that seems like a really widespread use case. I don't understand how TPU omits to test this

Where are all of those spare PCIe lanes are you referring to? Ryzen 3000 series have 24 PCIe lanes. This board uses 16 for the PCIe slot, 4 for the M.2 on the underside, and 4 for the Thunderbolt port on the rear IO panel. That's all you get. There are no spare lanes for more M.2 slots unless you take lanes from somewhere else.

Gotcha I forgot all those extra lanes from the chipset.

Given the price and positioning as a "gaming" board I would not be surprised if they withheld any extra engineering required to add more M.2 slots and are possibly saving that for a higher-end board at a later date. It's not easy to find space for M.2 slots, especially when the chipset requires so much space with the cooling fan.

I know ASUS has experimented with several vertical riser card mounting styles in the past like you mentioned but they all seem to have drawbacks and none have been popular enough to stick around for more than 1 generation. I don't even know how you would fit essentially a third DIMM slot on this board and have space to run the traces.
