The TDBT SuperC is a cool-looking, solid aluminum NVMe SSD enclosure that connects to your host system via USB-C. Coupled with a capable JMicron controller, this enclosure may just be the one you want, from a brand you may not have heard much of yet.

I've had one of these since May, to house the PM981 of my XPS 13 that was replaced by a SN750. It works like a charm. Really does make one appreciate the need for a heatsink, and how hot 45C really is to the touch.

I really would have appreciated this review before I made the purchase; there are so many of these external drives, and nearly all of them have a chunk of negative reviews of some sort from either users who don't know how to use and install M.2s, don't know how to read compatibility lists, or users who legitimately have gotten a defective or poor product.

An NVME with the speed of a SATA....yay?

Even capped at 3.2Gen2 / 10Gbps like all of these are, they're still miles faster than any SATA drive when paired with a capable NVMe and hardly any different day-to-day than when installed within. What do you think "NVMe" speeds really are? The rosy 3500MB/s advertisement numbers that you gobbled up without a thought?

"No IP water-resistance rating"?! Terrible considering the most common use-case of the machines people would connect this enclosure to is in the shower or the bath, sometimes even while swimming in the pool or the sea.

I'd say it's not about use, but about storage and transport. A most basic o-ring costs a few cents

I realize this thread is old but my post is relevant to the product reviewed...

I bought a TDBT SuperC in February 2020. I had problems with it so I contacted the manufacturer. A rep said he would send me a new one when they got a new shipment in. Note he said I could keep the original one. He sent me a new one in September 2020.

In comparing the two, the new one worked better but still was not stable. When I tested an SSD with CrystalDiskMark I could hear the USB beeping every few seconds during the test. This probably was why testing gave such poor results.

The USB 3.1 (10Gbps) port was in the back of the computer so I couldn't use it until now. I just got a USB 3.1 (10Gbps) powered hub so I finally was able to properly test the TDBT SuperC.

As you can see by the results below the SuperC gave poor results connected to USB 3.1 with the results poorer than those with USB 3.0.

CrystalDiskMark 8.0.4 Sequential Read/Write (only)

TBT SuperC with Intel 670p NVME SSD (512GB)
USB 3.0: 433/453 MB/s
USB 3.1: 380/399 MB/s
Pluggable USBC-NVME with Samsung 960 EVO SSD (500GB)
USB 3.0: 450/461 MB/s
USB 3.1: 762/772 MB/s

Notes:
USB 3.0 tests were done using USB 3.0 ports on the computer front panel.
USB 3.1 tests were done using a Rosonway 4-port USB 3.1 powered hub plugged into a USB 3.1 (10Gbps) port on the back of the computer.
