GIGABYTE Subsidiary GIGAIPC Launches Industry's First 5G-Enabled Embedded Computing System

5G has been a trending topic in the recent times because of the big technological breakthrough and all the solutions that its major features will make a reality: Low latency, bigger bandwidth with higher frequency, and overall faster "real-time" connection.

With those features 5G will connect virtually everyone and everything together in a fast and reliable network through the air while protecting privacy and security issues, that will mean the era of real IoT: Smart cities and smart transportations; remote medical care and wirelessly connected Industrial devices, and high-quality video streaming, to say the least.



The low latency and high-frequency bandwidth features are especially helpful in Industrial applications, especially in the "Industry 4.0": Machine Vision, Automated Guided Vehicle, Factory Automation, and other applications. Given it will help to free machines from cabling allowing more dynamic and mobile machine set up that will be easier to adapt to everyday needs. Also, it will make smoother collaboration within different machinery by allowing faster real-time remote connection to effectively improve production efficiency and yield.

Furthermore, the ability to transmit big chunks of data fast can allow us to have cloud-enable information centers to optimize the manufacturing process via data analysis of everyday processes.

Therefore, we are happy to announce that GIGABYTE subsidiary GIGAIPC developed the industry's first embedded high-efficiency fan-less industrial computer control system that supports 5G communication modules and already passed the verification of Taiwan main mobile carrier Chunghwa Telecom's 5G field test at the end of May 2020 (model name: QBiX-Pro-KBLB7100HD-A1).

The I/O interface will enable various industrial applications such as factory automation, smart transportation, smart retail, medical, and Internet of Things edge computing, and enable the high operational efficiency and service quality required in the 5G era. And most importantly it will provide customers the flexibility to arrange internal workspaces without the need for wired Internet access.

This would make a great gigabit LAN/WLAN router/firewall with pfSense or some such open source OS. But with all the keywords like 'industrial', 'automation' and 'embedded' in the press release, one can assume it will cost only about 13.5k$ a piece with 100pcs minimum order.

Also, I'm pretty sure these antennae are not lambda/2 separated, even for mmWave, i.e. sub-optimal radio performace is to be expected.
