Cooler Master Releases New Lightweight 49g Gaming Mouse: MM720

Cooler Master, a global leader in designing and manufacturing innovative gaming peripherals and computer components, has released the MM720 Gaming Mouse, a lightweight gaming mouse with ergonomic form factor. The MM720 launches in matte black and glossy white and is available for pre-order starting today, September 30, 2020. It will be available for purchase on October 27, 2020 via Amazon, respectively, for $49.99.

The MM720 takes the iconic shape of Cooler Master's previously popular Xornet and Spawn mice and replaces the housing with an ultralight honeycomb shell, similar to that found on the MM711 series of lightweight gaming mice. In addition, a lightweight ultra-weave cable reduces drag without compromising durability. As a result, the mouse weighs in at a total of 49 g and retains the same ergonomic benefits of its previous iterations.



"The Spawn and Xornet mice are still beloved in the PC gaming community to this day," says Bryant Nguyen, Peripheral General Manager. "Making an updated version of these mice was a matter of 'when' not 'if' - and adding a lightweight factor to it really puts it over the top as a must-have gaming accessory."

What's Upgraded?
Cooler Master has upgraded the internals considerably, with optical switches, a pro-grade 16000DPI optical gaming grade sensor, and PTFE feet for superior glide across your favorite surface. The internals have been coated in dust- and water-resistant material rated and certified at IP58 to provide increased protection.

As an added bonus, the first 30K units manufactured will also include Mice Grip tape included inside the retail packaging for added protection and control. The grip tape is made with anti-slip material, comes pre-cut and extra thick at 0.75 mm padding. The Grip Tape will also be available for retail at a later date and priced at $9.99 USD.

The MM720 joins Cooler Master's MM710 and MM711 to offer a varied lineup of super-lightweight mice in different shapes optimized for different grip types and playstyles. The most recent iterations of the MM711 mice have included limited edition Colorway Designs such as Blue Steel, Wilderness, and Retro - available at the Cooler Master online store, as well as other select retailers.

I loved the shape back in the day but I don't trust Cooler Master anymore. I had a nagging suspicion that since when they entered the mice scene after leaving it years ago, that they won't have good QC. But I was in need of a mouse and Razer Viper Mini was months away (in my country). So I bought the MM711 and an hardpad (Logitech G440). I rarely splurge on things but I was excited. And for a month I was. Hardpad was smooth af. Then the fucking backplate of the mouse bulged out and scrapped the pad. First two or three scratch marks and now the whole pad is ridden with scrapes.

Reason? Even the fucking backplate is ridden with holes and I think only the four screws on the corners didn't make it stable enough. Needs one or two screws in the middle. I called for RMA but they said stock won't be available until December. Fuck that. Bought super-glue and glued the plate to some pillar like structures in the middle through the holes.

Eww, that shape alienates users by being useless/horrible for two of the three most popular grip methods, and also alienates anyone who prefers to use their left hand for a mouse. To make it worse, even if you are a right-handed palm-grip fan, this particular shape may still not work because it's aimed at one particular hand size.

There are plenty of mice shapes for palm grip users that are both ambidextrous and comfortable for a wide range of hand sizes. Many of those also work reasonably well for fingertip or claw-grip users too.

This mouse shape just needs to DIAF, as far as I'm concerned; Anything shaped like this is a total ergonomic failure unless it's also offered in a range of sizes for both left and right-handed variants.

And before anyone thinks I'm hating on CM, I am typing this on their CMStorm Stealth keyboard and have a MasterMouse Lite S at work - both products I'd recommend in a heartbeat. This mouse, specifically this shape, deserves the hate I'm giving it.

Eh, my old Spawn is as great as it ever was. I never had problems with the build, but the sensor deserved better. I’m a low DPI user, so it wasn’t much of an issue, but still too much jitter...

As for the shape, it is a beloved claw grip mouse in that community. That it’s lighter than the spawn and xornet is a huge plus (it is ugly, though). You are only palming this if you have very small hands. Trying to palm my spawn as I’m typing and, with average hands, I can either rest my palm on it with my fingers dragging off the front (unable to click), or my wrist stuck to the pad and being limited to flicks. It is meant for claw and maybe fingertip (with your wrist set) grips.

That said, I always missed my WMO, so if I ever get back into gaming I’ll probably be chasing that dragon like everyone else.
