Dell's gaming subsidiary, Alienware, has launched a product designed to reintroduce products of a company that was abandoned in the laptop sector a long time ago. Alienware's last AMD-based gaming laptop made an appearance in 2007, and for 14 years there wasn't an Alienware laptop with an AMD processor inside it. For all those years, the heart of Alienware laptops was promised to Intel, however, that is no longer the case. Today, Alienware has introduced a Ryzen edition of the m15 R5 gaming laptop, powered by... you guessed it, AMD Ryzen 5000 series of mobile processors.

The new Alienware m15 R5 Ryzen Edition laptop is set to bring the balance to the force. Featuring AMD's flagship Ryzen 9 5900HX overclockable processor, the CPU is paired with NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 3070 graphics card. All of that is crammed inside a 15-inch body that offers QHD 240Hz or FHD 360Hz panels for the best possible gaming experience. For the cherry on top, the laptop offers Cherry MX keyboard switches with per-key RGB lighting. The new Ryzen edition Alienware laptop will be available for purchase in the U.S. with select configurations on April 20 starting at $1793.98. You can check out some pictures of the laptop below.

I hope they aren't as badly restricted as Intel laptops from Dell are.
I see too many complaints in our Throttlestop thread about Dell.

Thermal design-wise AW is alright. Most of the issues come out of the budget gaming (G5) laptops and the ultraportables.

Precision Boost on Cezanne APUs boost quite a bit smarter than your average Intel mobile CPUs, unfortunately they can be restrictive in different ways - AMD gives OEMs exclusive control over things like STAPM, through which they can still power or thermal limit the chips to their liking in a way that isn't accessible to the user. So, pretty much the same way as (infamous) Lenovo hobbles its mobile chips with artificially low 15W or 10W PL1. And no TS for AMD.

I think there is something out there akin to Throttlestop now for AMD, I think its called AMD Controller or Ryzen Controller or something like that. Claimed to give the user control over STAPM parameters.

Anyways, Cezanne is finally enjoying the real design wins that Renoir was hoping for. If AMD wants real marketshare, it's got to get its flagship parts into AW and Razer designs. Zephyrus G14 was a good start, but it can't be the only notable design win.

The last Alienware laptops I bought were 17" and 15" with the intel Core i7 7820HK with the GTX 1080.

I will be in the market for a new laptop probably next year with the RTX 3080 in it.

I think I'll stick with Intel, but I'll go for the Core i9.

Agreed - I have an area 51m r3 with 10700K and 2070. CPU is fine at 5.1 single core, 4.8 all core with no throttle (though bear in mind the A51 is a lot bigger and better cooled than this model). My previous Dell XPS15 on the other hand with a 8950HK/1050ti would throttle, make tons of noise from the fans, even with hyperthreading off. Also had a 15" eurocom with a a 6700K/980M that was decent, but still throttled and was noisy and not as good thermally as the alienware. Having said that the Area51m is a beast and weighs a ton, it's hardly portable, more like ultra SFF than a laptop.
