The Icy Dock EZ-Adapter MB031U-1SMB combines both M.2 SATA and 2.5" SATA connectivity via a USB 3.1 interface to access those types of drives quickly externally. With its compact size and detachable cable, it can be quite the little helper if dealing with these SATA drives on an ongoing basis.

Interesting to see if Apple, Android & Linux can access these drives. My drives, formatted in Windows-10 NTFS-compressed, are normally read-write, full speed, both ways, by both Linux & Android. Yet to test, whether booting from the SSD-USB mount works. Boot from the USB flash stick works easily with Linux, onto a PC.
