be quiet!'s Shadow Rock Slim 2 takes the mantle from its predecessor and carries it to new heights. What at first appears as just another tower cooler soon proves to be a top-tier low-noise performer that lacks only ARGB lighting, which will be a huge plus for many RGB haters.

Could you clarify the conclusion on value? It's on the Thumbs Down side, yet is near the top of both perf/$ charts. What am I missing?

Pretty self explanatory,

It is a decent value for the performance it offers at its low noise level. However, the ID-Cooling SE-224-XT Basic, offers far better bang for buck. either way I clarified the bullet point in the conclusion.

This review got me curious about the budget / value options. There's some intriguing 6 heat pipe direct contact coolers on ebay for dirt cheap.

@crazyeyesreaper how long do you let the aida64 test run? you mention 15 mins for the other tests but don't mention a number for that specific test.

reason I ask is I am surprised to see top end air coolers do 10 celsius worse than the 360 aio, but match the 360 aio in other tests like blender

its 15 mins, same with all tests. I have not found a cooler that doesn't reach equilibrium before that point.

On AMD, the AVX instructions in the AIDA FPU test cause massive heat generation but much less so on the Intel side. So Blender test is more indicative of what I would consider a real world workload. AIDA64 FPU only test is basically just for maximum heat generation. If a cooler can pass the AIDA64 FPU test then you know in a warmer climate, you will likely be A-okay under even heavy workloads.

But every test is 15 mins repeated 3x times.

Same time those the SE-207-XT performed pretty badly for its weight and size. Just goes to show one product may be a slam dunk (SE-224-XT Basic) and the next could be pretty lackluster. Could also be my SE-224-XT is possible out of typical tolerance range? For example if the base is a touch thicker because less material was removed that would also increase mounting pressure and therefore performance. But eitherway in my testing and on my test benches the SE-224-XT is basically the go to entry level cooler. Be quiet! does a good job here especially if you look at noise results but the charts show the proof is in the pudding so to speak. If noise doesn't matter. $15 or so in savings on the cooler means a better case, larger SSD, better PSU, etc etc. On the flip side if you can't stand a loud cooler. The Shadow Rock Slim 2 is one of the best in this segment.

Very nice. I may with a 360mm AIO then on my next build.

Just keep in mind there is a lot to consider, As noticed the Intel test bench hits 200-watts vs the AMD bench which is around 150-watts, a cooler on the AMD side may fail but survive on the Intel side. So i suggest, looking at as many reviews as possible and also consider the CPU. If your going 10-12-16 cores then yeah 360 is probably a good bet. But I would lean towards checking the 45 dBA charts more often than not. for a example.

AMD Blender OC test 45 dBA noise normalized results:

Corsair H150i Capellix (3x 120 mm fans) 74C
EK-AIO Elite 360 (6x 120 mm fans) 72C
NH-D15 79C

So yeah 360 AIOs did much better. However,
NH-D15 is $100-110
Elite 360 is $200
H150i Capellix is $190 (on sale now for about $175)

So nearly double the cost to 5-7'C. Not all AIOs are competitive either. The G.SKILL ENKI didnt do nearly as well on the AMD side. 2C better than the NH-D15 while being around $180 at launch.

So always take the time for due diligence before you buy.

The Arctic 420mm AIO was on sale last week for $130 even shipped and sold by Amazon. If it's still on sale I may go buy it now just for future builds... we'll see. I doubt we see that cheap ever again.

Just get Scythe Mugen 5 PCGH edition if you have enough space. Better cooling & quieter for the same price.

be quiet should really make the crossbar fix to the heatsink as well as the screws captive. It was a pita with the Dark Rock Pro 4

I had issues with the AM4 mounting, it works fine with intel.

As you said Scythe Mugen 5 PCGH edition, if you have enough space, a sturdy motherboard and you won't be moving the PC a lot. Scythe Kotetsu Mark II should be compared with Shadow Rock Slim 2. Probably slightly weaker (since Scythe Fuma 2 is on par), but more compact and cheaper.
