Meze Audio is a Romanian brand famous worldwide for a harmonious combination of design, build quality, comfort-in-use, and tuning. Today, we examine its budget-friendly 99 Neo, which is a closed-back set of headphones that is bass-emphasized.

Interesting read. I purchased a pair of these to add to my Fiio K5 Pro for desktop gaming and they work well enough. I needed a closed pair and my old Sennheiser Momentums were no longer cutting it. I do agree that the bass is emphasized, but I have Equalizer and Peace installed on my pc along with some Parametric EQ profiles. Yes, it's a bit of a chore to tweak the headphone, but the results are way better.

Any recommendations for a more balanced closed, over ear headphone?

Depends on what you are looking for specifically, but the AKG K371 is pretty decent. If you can find them, the Creative Aurvana Live/SE are also well tuned, especially for the money, although they do lack the dynamics of the Meze 99 Neo.

Thanks the AKG are already on my listening list.

Just in case anyone is interested and wants to tweak these headphones then search the internet for Equalizer APO and Peace (2 small programs), then the specific settings I used to tame some of the base are noted below. You will need to create a text file and import in to Peace.

Preamp: -6.0 dB
Filter 1: ON PK Fc 180 Hz Gain -10.0 dB Q 1.0
Filter 2: ON PK Fc 401 Hz Gain 4.0 dB Q 3.0
Filter 3: ON PK Fc 1200 Hz Gain 2.0 dB Q 1.0
Filter 4: ON PK Fc 2300 Hz Gain 4.0 dB Q 3.0
Filter 5: ON PK Fc 3808 Hz Gain 5.5 dB Q 4.0
Filter 6: ON PK Fc 8600 Hz Gain -5.0 dB Q 4.0
