If you don't want to pay considerably more to get a Corsair, Seasonic, or Cooler Master PSU of similar capacity, the Steampunk 850 W is a very good choice at $90, especially if 1st Player keeps using the Japanese caps on the secondary side, which are difficult to find nowadays.

I wouldn't buy it for the garbage fan alone. I love how it's not expected to outlive the warranty, especially lol. The fan in my current Corsair has been running just fine since I got it in 2009 and so have the Noctua fans in my CPU cooler since 2011 (see specs for both) so it's really not hard to make fans that last a really long time. How much would it add to the cost? Maybe $3-5? That's nothing?

And what's with the branding? I could live with the stupid name if I had to, I guess.

I'm talking about the cost to the consumer. Remember, these things are bought in bulk so are much cheaper for an mfr. Even if it was production costs, it's still not much. A small increase in retail price to cover it if necessary isn't going to be noticed.

I think it would be. In the consumer space, at least in the US, this is a very minor brand. If you're Seasonic, EVGA or Corsair, sure; charge an extra 5 bucks for a better fan. As a small/new player, though? You've got a couple of primary choices: Produce something really good and hope that you gain some reputation quickly enough to generate sales, or go for the value play and convince buyers to look at you on price. Seems like 1st Player chose the latter.

Yes, they probably did choose the latter and in my opinion it's a very stupid choice.

A crappy fan that starts making screeching / rattling noises after a short while really brings down the perception of the brand. If they're struggling to establish themselves as this appear to be doing, it could really hurt their sales and perhaps kill them off.

Think about it, this PSU measured nothing special in the tests here and those in the know like us will want something better. However, if you've just bought the thing from the store without researching it, don't know much about computers and electronics and it powers the PC ok, then these failings aren't gonna mean anything and won't hurt the brand. A crappy fan that soon starts playing up will, though. Short sighted and stupid decision by the company that made this.

To be fair, that fan is garbage. It probably would fail way too fast if it couldn't spin down.
