The latest Steam Hardware survey from January 2022 shows significant growth for VR headsets with the number of connected units reaching 3.4 million or 2.14% of Steam users. This is up from 2.95 million in December 2021 with the Meta Quest 2 responsible for the majority of this growth now accounting for 46.02% of the VR headsets used on Steam despite being able to operate without a connected computer. Meta now controls 67.3% of the PC VR market with Valve coming in second at 14.4%, HTC third at 11.2%, and Microsoft fourth with just 5% market share. The total number of monthly-connected VR headsets has risen 29.5% since this time last year but it remains to be seen if this growth will continue past the holiday season.

If it becomes better than now. More like in Scifi movies or Star Trek.

Index 2 will be amazing! The Index is amazing, but I agree I'd wait for Index 2 over spending a grand on the first one.

We are there. Half-life Alyx made me feel like I was in an epic movie. It's truly that good. I played on a Vive/Rift S/Quest 2 and it was amazing. I can't say enough about the Zen Alien flora looks amazing and life like. The out door night scenes are my favorite. It's the closest thing to photo realistic in any VR game. One other game that is really good is Lone Echo. The game mechanics make you feel like you are floating in space in a space ship.

I think most users would be very surprised at the Quest 2's level of quality for just 299. I can also agree that it's only going to get better, but Quest 2 isn't a bad spot to jump in for the price. No other headset offers anything close to it for the price. It's close to 4k, 120hz refresh rate, AIO with fast hardware, Modular headstrap, built in audio, customizable face masks, touch controllers.

May be, but he asked specifically about mainstream, for mainstream I feel it has to be even better and easier applicable, my comment not only is about quality but also about application easiness, which is way easier in some sci-fi movies than we currently have here. Mainstream is all about the appeal of it being easy to do and only after that the quality matters. Yes of course Index has great quality, I know that already. Then look at how complex the setup is. That level of quality must come down to way simpler devices that cost way less and then we can talk about mainstream. Until then normal gaming is good enough and the typical go to for the main stream.

Well that's what I'm saying the quest 2 is comparable to an Index for around 1/3 the price and the setup is way easier with it's inside out tracking. Don't get me wrong the Index has better tracking and audio but the resolution is better on the Quest 2 and the ease of us is way better. I can't go back to base stations after the Rift S and Quest 2. I know no matter what I say it won't change your mind about the Quest 2 and it's ease of use, but to say we are not there is wrong. I have been in VR since I bought my DK1 in 2012 and out of all of those years I've never had anyone I know say they were going to buy a VR HMD until the Quest 2. I have someone asking me about the Quest 2 weekly and way more people that I know have bought a Quest 2 and love it. I can't say you are completely wrong. I do think it has to get better but I don't think VR needs to replace Pancake Monitor games. I don't see why people have to compare it to that level. Monitor games did not replace board games.

No problem, I can look into the Quest 2. I'm not narrow-minded or anything like that. Certainly from what you say it sounds good.

You have a more than capable machine to play Half-Life Alyx and really any other game. If you decide to get a Quest 2 then don't forget to add it to your specs and jump over to our VR and AR section. One of the best features is that on the Quest 2 you can play wireless PCVR games with no extra hardware. I think right now though it might be a good idea to wait a couple months for Cambria. That is if you don't mind paying a high price for a "Pro" level hmd, but even if you don't want to spend more than 299 then the Quest 2 is a great HMD.

If Cambria is around 499 then I think I'll upgrade. Just a heads up that after you play PCVR then regular pancake game will be boring. Also, Pavlov VR is amazing.

2,14%, now that's what I call market penetration. Let's not kid ourselves, most buying a VR headset for VR porn.
Because VR gaming just sucks. The only useful case I see in racing games. And even there I would prefer a ultra wide monitor.

And the health risk is also a factor to consider. Myopia is skyrocketing with the increase of screen time. A VR headset will most likely be a real eye sight killer.

So, was wondering about VR movies. How is the experience with a VR headset compared to VR in cinema. Is it worth it?
