Today we are allowed to show you pictures of the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and XT cards that we're currently running in our labs. The $999 Radeon RX 7900 XTX goes up against the $1200 GeForce RTX 4080, and the RX 7900 XT costs only $899 and will compete with the upcoming GeForce RTX 4070 Ti.

Strange that they felt the need to design and manufacture different heatsinks for these cards. I guess it just shows that the 7900XT was supposed to be 7800XT at first, or something, but AMD wanted to sell it at a higher price, so were forced to rename it to 7900XT, as the price difference itself does not really make sense for the spec level vs. XTX.

Like 4080, the 7900XT is looking to be worse price/performance than 4090/7900XTX, which is a shame: 87.5% lower core count and 4GB less VRAM vs. 7900XTX, but for 90% of the price, while the 6800XT had 90% the core count with the same VRAM for 65% of the money - bigger spec gap for almost the same price.

I have no idea why people still think that the 7900xt is a renamed 7800xt. The 7900xt is a 320bit bus card and 6800xt has a 256bit bus.

Because memory bus isn't the main measure of a card.

Looking at raw specs, it's 83% of the XTX for 90% of the money, so on paper it's already losing in a value contest to a flagship which is supposed to be the worst-value model with the highest premium and highest profit margin.

Unless the XTX is horribly bottlenecked in benchmarks and barely faster than the XT, I forsee a drop in price of the 7900XT to $799 before the year is out.

I am skipping this gen so I haven’t kept up with the specs, but I thought the 7900xtx is supposed to compete with 4090, and 7900xt against the 4080. Is that not true anymore?

This isnt gaming or anything but

Geekbench just needs to go away for good. You can literally take identical hardware, run two very slightly different versions of Geekbench, and get two wildly different results. All Geekbench graphs actually show is "how much effort has Primate Labs (the Geekbench developer) put into making Geekbench run on this particular hardware so far".
  • Scores change over time.
  • Relative positioning of products change over time.
  • Results are random based on OS, not the hardware being tested.
In fact, the only constant with Geekbench is the quality of the data; It is consistently useless.

Why would it compete with a card that's 50% more expensive?

I'm most interested whether the new review will include a faster processor too.

I'm just about to purchase a Sapphire Toxic 400W 6900XT and these are nearly here. Getting it cheaper than either of these cards though and I'll order it and it shall arrive, not add me to a waiting list.

Personally, I wish that AMD kept using the R encased in a cube, like they did on Vega's cards.

It was never true.
AMD have made no comparisons to Nvidia in any of their events or marketing. They are not priced like Nvidia products, all comparisons of the 7900-series AMD have made are to the AMD 6000-series.

Third parties (like us and other content creators) have speculated, based off multiplying AMD's claimed performance increase over 6000-series parts and then extrapolating. That makes several assumptions, many of which are potentially wrong. The biggest problem with all of the speculation is that it's assuming that RDNA3 performance and clock scaling is the same as RDNA2 performance and clock scaling.

The speculation so far seems to indicate that the 7900XTX will be 10-15% slower than a 4090.

Simple, so Ngreedia would drop prices, so he can buy another Ngreedia GPU!

Did they mention DSC support over DP? I'm worried they could have dropped DSC support due to DP 2.1 54Gbps implementation (which old 4k120+hz and 1440p240+hz cannot take advantage of).

Like this:

Vega was a little HBM disaster they prefer to forget.
No need to revive it whatsoever as it doesn't serve any good for the Radeon brand.

Those 79xx cards do look good, sleek and with a sense of and maturity. Still not NV 3\4 level but it is good not to over do it and keep cost down.

I want RT numbers. Don’t care about the looks.
I agree with those who wrote the 7900XT seems to have a terrible value as well as the 4080 to their big brothers.

No gpu is bad if it’s priced accordingly.

Honestly, pretty ugly ass reference cards. Not that it matters that much to me, i always take them off for a waterblock anyways.

Die size and memory bus has been the main measurements for as long as i remember.
The 6800xt (and 6800) had the exact same memory setup as the full die 6900xt.
The 7900xt not only cuts a similar % of CUs to the 6800xt, but also cuts down the amount of memory, the memory bus, and even the L3 cache. It is a more cut down card comparatively than the 6800xt, but costs $250 more.
It probably out performs the 6900xt, but it still ought not cost so much. Would be more interesting in that original price range of $650, maybe even $700.
That said I expect both cards to see price cuts in 6 months at the most. Most people into high performance/high price seem to buy Nvidia, and even Nvidia can’t sell the 4080. Ideally chiplet makes it easier to get in a price war for AMD.
