With everyone busy enjoying the announcements of new shiny toys at CES, Intel has taken the opportunity to jack up the prices on its older 12th Gen Core processors by around 10 percent. This wasn't entirely unexpected though, as Intel announced back in June of last year that it was going to increase the MSRP of its 12th Gen Core processors. The price increase affects different SKUs wildly differently, as the Core i9-12900K for example, is seeing a US$59 price increase and its new MSRP is now US$648, which is more than the Core i9-13900K which has an MSRP of US$589. On the other hand, the Core i3-12100 only gets a $12 price increase, which puts its new MSRP at US$134, which places it in the same price bracket as the Core i3-13100.

This is a very unusual move by Intel and it affects all of its 12th Gen Core desktop processors and possibly some other SKUs as well. Considering the 13th Gen Core parts are either priced cheaper or fall in the same price bracket, it's hard to see how Intel is going to see any sales of its older 12th Gen Core processors, especially as the two share the same socket. It's highly unlikely that this move will affect its shareholders in a positive way either, as Intel is likely to see lower sales with this price increase of its previous generation of processors, which in turn will result in even lower revenue. That said, it's unclear if this will affect retail pricing or not, as it's possible that many stores won't replenish their stock of 12th Gen Core CPUs once their current stock sells out.

Seems to be like the 12900k is available for way below MSRP in anycase here in UK, not sure about US ?

This news sucks. The 12400F was a budget build go-to cpu.
Launch price was $174, now it's $184-$194, so not a huge bump and still cheaper than the 13400F which is $196.

If they want less profit and more potential customers ignoring them, let them continue in their foolish ways.
Milking their DDR4 platform just because AMD has DDR5 for the new parts is low, but as they wish.

Who in his mind will choose this over 5800x for $40 more or 5700 for almost same? Even the 5600 non X is $140 and faster in 90% of the cases and 13400f faster for same price

Sounds like the 13xxx series is overstocked and Intel wants to "gently push" sales.

RPL's performance is a decent step up from ADL and with prices this comparable now (and so many motherboard manufacturers releasing ADL/RPL compatible BIOSes for 6xx chipsets) this is definitely Intel trying to make people an offer they can't refuse. At this point going 12th gen for a new budget build doesn't make much sense when you can shell out an extra 35-40 bucks and get 8-12% better performance.

The 12400F was going for $165 USD last week. Pair that up with a $120 B660 board and a cheap set of DDR4 3200 along with a $20 Thermalright 120mm cooler and you have the makings of a budget build. Try doing that with Raptor Lake.

But the keywords there are "last week". Once the price increases take effect it will be closer to the $200-$210 MSRP of the 13400F. An extra 40ish bucks for what's essentially a power-optimized i5-12600K feels like a no brainer and you can use the same $120 B660 board, $50 16gb DDR4-3200 kit, and $20 Thermalright cooler.

But you're right if you're seriously strapped for cash you could just go for the 12400f as it's still a very capable gaming chip. But to me it feels like it's worth it to just mow the yard a few extra times for the RPL part

Hi,
Yep close the budget gap a little.
Retailers will do what ever to move stock anyway so intel can hold their pecker by 10% in that case

I hope so. If I can buy a 13600K at Micro Center or Newegg for $249 like the 12600K's have been priced at I'm getting one.

This news sucks. The 12400F was a budget build go-to cpu.

I think it's important to remember right now that silicon wafers are like 20-30% more expensive than they used to be, so 10% hike is fair imo.

The world is just going nuts right now, we have to ride the storm. Personally, I am not spending any money now that my PC is done. I'm hunkering down for a few years, because I think it's going to get worse, especially with the Avian Flu wiping out the food supply.

Budget option? The sales figures of Alder Lake/Raptor Lake compared to Zen 4 would say otherwise, Zen 3 generally still dominates sales.

The announcement of the price increase is weird though, all of the Alder Lake Skus are selling and have been selling for less than their MSRPs for the past couple of weeks or so, and with the locked raptor lake skus releasing soon...... Is Intel intentionally trying to make people go with a budget Zen 3 build instead of their own 12th gen skus if these price increases actually happen smh

Tell me the scientific economic demand-supply reason while as I see the EU market above i3-12100 and i5-12400 there are best offers from AMD. But i5-12400 is already depending on your wishes or taste, because of good offering R5 5600(non-x).

The Mindfactory sales figures do not of course bear any relationship to the overall market share between AMD and Intel. The data issued by Mercury Research for Q3 2022 paints a somewhat different picture

CPU_market_share_2022-768x198.png

The reduction in AMD's desktop and mobile market share was reflected in its financial results for Q3 2022. Intel will be reporting its Q4 2022 financial results on 26 January 2023, and AMD's Q4 2022 numbers will be on 7 February 2023. These might be worth looking out for.

But going back to the subject of this thread Intel can increase the price of its 12th gen CPUs because it dominates the desktop market. The 12400/F is one of its major sellers and the price gap to the 13400 currently looks a touch too wide. So Intel will narrow that gap. Will it affect sales, probably not.
