Gainward's GeForce RTX 4080 Phoenix GS comes at NVIDIA MSRP price of $1200, which makes it an attractive offer. In our review we found out that the thermal solution is one of the quietest of all the RTX 4080 cards we've tested so far, and the factory overclock helps unlock additional performance.

has anyone tried soldering on 8-pin power connectors onto these boards? i've seen a few 4080 and 4090 PCBs that look like they can take 8-pin power connectors

What I meant to say, and I'm sure you know that too, is that it's one of the most affordable 4080s, obviously 4080 is out of range for the hardware budgets of most people.

Boooooring... Bought my first car for less and it still drives me to work 8 years on. Sorry, normal people need more news on normal priced video cards, not some wet dream of nVdia execs. For $1200 I can have a PS5 and life supply of video games. You have to do better than that, Jensen.

Don't mind this card for the looks etc. Looking into a 4080 myself and always after a card that is efficient this one fits the bill.

Well, it seems to be the most efficient card made recently! Thermals and noise levels seem good too. Pretty hard to beat.

Thanks W1z.

Not my first GPU also a soft spot, I had a 7800gs AGP gs from gainward. Great card till it died!

4080 is great hardware, too expensive. Reduce the price of all 40xx series 50% and winning products,

Looks like they started using the 4070 Ti reference PCB layout, so Alphacool full cover should be compatible.
Gainward belongs to Palit parent group. So in theory it's mostly the fan shrouds that are different.

Bought a top-of-the-line Gainward GTX580 (3GB) for $450, and it still works today. Good card, at a good price.

Just gonna say it again, anything $500+ and you are simply scamming your customers.

Another nice-looking, well-made 4080 that's essentially ruined by the price. In a healthy GPU market it's an $800 card at most. Times are still strained from the pandemic/ETH hit and we haven't fully recovered from that yet.

This review will be useful in 2 years from now when I'm looking to buy a cheap, used 4080 in protest of Nvidia's $1999 MSRP for the new 5080...

Also, a fully-populated PCB makes me happy - it's space-efficient and working exactly as designed:

It's hard to get excited about paying for something this expensive and then being given a half-populated PCB that is clearly missing parts:
1677852725331.png

MSI: "Yeah, we could have made it better but we elected to save $12. Don't worry, you still get to pay for the PCB we didn't use with both your money and the physical space it wastes..."

i'm sorry what? going from 397.4 to 404.8 fps is a 4.5% improvement? since when?

100 - 397.4 / 404.8 * 100 = 1.82% improvement
for it to be a 4.5% improvement the fps would need to increase to 415.3, not 404.8

where is the 4.5% improvement coming from?
am i missing something or is this copy-paste?

Gday @W1zzard,

Any chance we can change the way we see the pictures in "Pictures & Teardown" and "Circuit Board Analysis"?

The pictures are all good and when you click on them the enlargement/zoom in it's fine, it's just when I want to look at the next picture you have to close it and open a new one.

Anyway we can put an arrow say on the right-hand side of the picture so you just click on the arrow, and it will cycle to the next picture without closing it to look at the next one? And basically, a left arrow if you would like to cycle back to the previous picture. Makes is a lot quicker to view all pictures too. Any chance this is doable, while still keeping the close button for once you're finished observing?

Also, on the "Pictures and Teardown" your Packaging sub menu it would be nice to see what contents are included inside the retail box, like a graphics card support holder or any other accessories included etc.

Sometimes this can be a deciding factor of the purchase you would like to make. I have been looking into this card (and others) and would like to see what's included in the retail box, but it was missing.

I know this can be a lot to ask when you are already tasked with an exuberant amount of content in your reviews. All good if this can't be done. Fully understand.

Just trying to help you make your reviews better : )

Thanks W1z.

Whoops, yes, fixed

Nothing of substance is included with modern graphics cards. Shooting that one photo takes like 10 minutes, I used to do that. But many years ago I decided to spend that time on other more useful photos, you're the first one to mention it now. The mfgr website mentions included stuff in detail anyways, if there's a mousepad or card holder

arrow, and it will cycle to the next picture
That's a limitation of our site engine. Not happy with it either, but I have no easy fix atm

No worries all good. I'll go have a look see at the specific cards website if need be.

Spuwen hey. Would be a nice feature.

Thanks for your reply.

Another very tidy PCB. This plus a nice custom waterblock would make for a clean custom loop card.

$1200 though.....man.....I think I'll sit this generation out.

I had 3 GTX1080. asus strix, msi gaming x and gainward phoenix. overall gainward phoenix was the best. I kept the gainward and sold the other two. it's still in my main gaming rig. after nearly 7 years of intense mining and gaming it is still working like day1. even thermal paste not changed once.
