Intel Outs Video Super Resolution for Chromium Browsers, Works with iGPUs 11th Gen Onward

Intel Graphics has introduced feature rivaling NVIDIA VSR (virtual super resolution) for Chromium-based web-browsers such as Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, which enhances the quality of streaming video, both from lower resolutions to higher; as well as improving the quality at native resolution. This was discovered in the change-log of a Chrome build, which talks about the introduction of a "-features=IntelVpSuperResolution" command-line argument to start Chrome with, to enable the feature.

Apparently, the Intel VSR feature works on Intel iGPUs dating back to the 11th Gen Core ("Tiger Lake" and "Rocket Lake,") based on the Xe-LP graphics architecture. The feature should come particularly handy when trying to upscale online video from lower resolutions (such as SD 360p/480p or HD 720p), up to Full HD (1080p) or higher. It's reported that VSR is enabled by default on Chrome/Edge 110, and doesn't require that command-line argument. To use it, you will need Intel iGPU graphics drivers version 27.20.100.8681 or later.

While this is not innovative it is a good move for those on a shitty internet connection. Obviously anime was picked because of simplicity of the image, we'll see how well it works with something that requires more details.

Not really. It really works, the problem is the implementations in browsers are rather lackluster. MADvr's implementation of AI postprocessing works much better, it really makes 1080p video look like 2160p.

We need a review for this 3 implementations: microsoft vs nvidia vs intel: image quality, power usage / image quality.
The fact that it runs on igpus means that it is very low power, contrary with the nvidia one which puts almost a full gaming load on the gpu.

Anime titties in 4k win win in my book.....

Real talk though I tested the Nvidia variant on 1080p anime and wasn't impressed..

aye ... so do i ...

also ... Nvidia will do it (their way) Intel will do it (their way) AMD will do it their way openly for all hardware as usual?

i feel that VSR for browser should be hardware agnostic from the start, developped by a Chromium team and helped by all 3 (or by AMD alone ... they tend to be more open )
a bit like what Opera did for the GX version of the browser with RGX (which basically just sharpen videos) since end of last year.
