Hello

I was wondering if my 7 y/o Seasonic power supply 850W Gold could handle my card on a single 8-pin ?

I have a gainwar phenix GS rated at 240W, and only have one pci-e cable left :/

So card has two 8 pin slots, you have got only one 8 pin PCI-E cable available for your PSU, your card is rated at 240W (without overclocking) and one 8 pin PCI-E connection will give you 225w (8 pin=150w, PCI-E slot=75w), may well work but you may have to downclock the card when using any intensive app or game otherwise it will possibly crash.

It is probable that you are not going to get the most out of your card.

Yes you've summarized it pretty well, I an now looking at how I can workaround this with afterburner without compromising performance

Well if you would normally overclock, you would need to increase the power limit, even if the power limit gives you just +10% that would make it a 264w power draw, I don't really see how you can use the card to it's full potential but even if you have to peg it back from it's current stock settings it is still a good card, although you may have been better off buying one with just the single 8 pin had you have known the limitation.

The limitation here is just that I dont have another pci-e cable and I refuse to pay 20$ for one, anyway It seems according to gpu-z that if I lower to 77% the power in AF I stay below the 150W on the pci-e side but I do loose some performance it seems, trying to play with the curve with AF to undervolt but it's a bit of a pain

I think I'm just going to buy a new PSU and be done with it, 7 years is a good run :)

You have 225w currently available, 150 thru your 8 pin cable, 75 from the motherboard slot, if you can keep it slightly under 225w with a mild undervolt and/or underclock you would prob be OK. HWinfo would tell you what you are pulling if you test it with a game and keep it open in your sys tray.

I would do this !
You can always keep that old PSU around for troubleshooting or use it in another PC that has a less power hungry GPU.

staying below 225W is not enough because there is now way to tell the graphic card to pull 75W for the pcie port it willl always be a percentage and what I have noticed is that it's more 40W + 185W anyway no smell of burnt plastic yet :D

Yes It will join my old Intel/MB that I can't seem to sell :D

Weird that the card even works with one cable as it has two connectors.

I can’t see that OP stated that it worked with one cable. I myself doubt it would power up with just one cabled based on the times were I forgot to connect the cable(s). I‘m sure that you can buy a splitter, but I rather buy a new PSU than using that.

Yes I'm obviously using one cable that is using a splitter, it would not boot otherwise.

I could've understood wrong as I'm hella tired.
