Gematsu - a Japanese news site - has discovered that the Game Rating and Administration Committee of Korea uploaded its rating of an announced remake of Quake II (1997) on May 31—apparently "not suitable" for youths. This could repeat a pattern from 2021, where the same committee registered the original Quake's remastered version prior to an official unveiling at that year's livestreamed QuakeCon event.

QuakeCon 2023 is heading back to its roots—with a return to an in-person format "at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas from Thursday, August 10 through Sunday, August 13." It is quite possible that Quake II Remastered will get an unveiling at the late summer convention. It will be interesting to see how the upcoming remaster will sit beside the existing RTX version—the South Korean rating info mentions new online multiplayer options, 4K resolution plus widescreen support, as well as support for community modification.

I really like this return of the... newly coined boomer shooter.

But I'm not a boomer :D

The KEX lads did a fine job with Q1. I'm sure Q2 will be good as well, after a couple months of patches

I'm interested, but I can't excuse the 'sadness' intertwined with this.
From what I've gathered: While Quake II was an acclaimed FPS, it was soulless and a miserable development experience.

Handy, have been trying to replay it, but the game is plagued with music playback issues (even in the sourceports). I'll happily sacrifice my 1/3 run into the game to wait. :).

Gotta be honest, I'm shocked anyone would go through any of these games again today...nostalgia is nostalgia but I for one am not a fan of rudimentary graphics and gameplay elements. QuakeWorld on the original game....that was something, drop-in polygonal multiplayer, Lithium II mod with off-hand grapple and custom skins/character models for Q2 multi was equally impressive, but the SP game on these was...............well I'm glad someone loves it, it's just not my thing.

The new Doom games are impressive for what they are, I'd like to see someone spin up a new Quake versus just remasters of ancient code..worked with Wolfestein, worked with Doom........Quake, where you at?

My favorite retro shooter. But I'd say it doesn't need a remaster with the RTX version existing.

I'd love to see a proper Doom-like remake or reboot of the series.

Same with Unreal. I'd download the Epic launcher for that.

The RTX version is awful and destroys the ambience of the levels for 'moar pretty lights'.

It also doesn't work with any of the expansion packs.

Probably Unreal, Unreal 2 together with the DeusEx 1 and 2, should be the games that are in need the most of a re-do with the latest Engine and technologies. However, 1 thing they should mandatory keep, is their epic music. That is something that can never be replaced, except maybe with a Hi-Q remastered soundtrack.

What do you mean "sit next to the Quake 2 RTX remaster"!? Nvidia's port is 100% backwards compatible with Quake 2 and most source ports, including Quake 2 pro and Yamagi Quake - including mods and cross play online!

That's false, Quake 2 RTX only works with the base game, and in no way works with any source port.

Nvidia's port is 100% backwards compatible with Quake 2 and most source ports, including Quake 2 pro and Yamagi Quake - including mods and cross play online! The mission packs DO WORK IN Q2RTX, I've played them in coop online myself. The reason they aren't officially supported is because of the textures they use (Nvidia couldnt make custom physically based textures for every mod and missionpack).

Q2rtx looks excellent, the lighting is customizable and adjustable like everything else in Quake. People complaining is just cope because their graphics cards run it slow.

That's false, Quake 2 RTX only works with the base game, and in no way works with any source port.

I literally was playing on servers with mostly Q2 pro players minutes ago. I play demos in Q2RTX recorded in years before Q2RTX ever existed. You have no idea what you're talking about. Quake 1, 2, and 3 all work like this, source ports of Q2 can be cross compatible as long as they run off the core game.dll file, id specifically emphasized the polymorphic nature in Quake 2 and 3 especially. Only Quake XP and a minority of source ports are incompatible, MOST Q3 sourceports are cross play compatible.

Q2RTX has been updated substantially since 2019. If you only played it back then you should try again. Q2RTX is essentially built on top of Q2PRO.

In fact, the Q2RTX remaster is more compatible with the original game and mods than the Quake 1 remaster from Nightidive!
