US Computer component retailer Micro Center has announced that the store has struck an exclusive deal with AMD to be the sole retailer for the Ryzen 5 5600X3D processor. The CPU is apparently a limited edition release, although it's not clear how limited it'll be in terms of available quantities. The new CPU will launch on the 7th of July and has a base clock of 3.3 GHz and a boost clock of 4.4 GHz, each 100 MHz slower than the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. The CPU obviously has six CPU cores, which results in a total cache of 99 MB due to the missing two cores.

The TDP remains at 105 W and it appears that the Ryzen 5 5600X3D might just consist of failed Ryzen 7 5800X3D chips sold with two cores disabled. From what TPU understands, there should be some OEM availability of the Ryzen 5 5600X3D as well, based on what our sources have told us, but we don't have any details on which system integrators might be offering the CPU. Micro Center will be charging US$229.99, which is US$220 less than what the Ryzen 7 5800X3D launched at, although Micro Center is currently selling it at US$279.99. The Ryzen 5 5600X3D will also be offered at a discounted price when bought with eligible motherboard and memory bundles from Micro Center.

Not only US-exclusive, but store-exclusive? What a shame, the 5600X3D had potential to be an absolute banger in the third world.

Im curious if you'll be able to unlock the extra cores like on the old Phenom X3 chips. Its still a win if you could unlock them but run all the cores at a slower but more stable speed right?

ORLY?

Quite surprising.
Rather the opposite I'd say; with so few buying AMD's latest CPUs and GPUs due to the company's greed in pricing them at stupid levels, they're facing a revenue hole. And what better way to fill that hole with previous-generation die-harvested chips?

I knew it was coming, but only as an OEM CPU, not as a retail product, so yes, quite surprising.
Also being Microcenter exclusive which already has quiet limited presence in US makes this even more surprising of a "Limited edition" CPU.

Exactly, that makes it nearly double the cost of the 5600X and more expensive than the 5800X! Only idiots would pay that much for an obsolete CPU, but there are a lot of those on these forums.

No. The hardware makers have gotten wiser since those days and fuse things off properly.

They could have at least slapped a label on it like "Lisa Sue Special Edition" so it at least seems special for that price.

Well considering it will be faster than the 5800x in most games that makes sense

Instead of doing good by emergent markets and low income countries, they just release these to wealthy Americans who already have the cheapest hardware in the world and don't need shortcuts like this.

Lovely, AMD really, really has its priorities straight lately

Patience Grasshopper.

Notice he repeatedly talks about the "launch" of this processor at MicroCenter. He does not say it will only be sold "forever" at MicroCenter. This practice is not uncommon. Certain retailers will often sponsor the "launch" of new products - meaning they have a few days of exclusive sales.

You see this all the time with new movie releases where one theater chain has exclusive rights for the release of "launch" of the new movie.

Also note around the 1:20 time point he said these CPUs are "defects". That means (to me), they couldn't pass certification to be become one processor. So it is "rejected". AMD, in order to prevent a total loss in their investments, dummy-downed the specs and call it a different processor. This practice also is not uncommon.

"IF" there continues to be high numbers of these "defective" CPUs, they certainly will become available through other retail outlets. But "IF" AMD is able to reduce the failure rates significantly - which I would think is a primary goal - then I suspect even MicroCenter will stop selling them due to a lack of availability.

Either way, not sure I would want a CPU born out of the reject bin.

I know - Its all laser cut these days. Would have been crazy if it did work... or maybe do it via a pin mod? Nobody will know!

the 7th? Who the hell thought that was a good day to release it? I have to work that day. If they released it on the 5th I'd have swung out to Micro Center to grab one since I have that day off. I'd like to play with one just for the hell of it.

I've been eyeing some RAM at Micro Center for a while to upgrade in my system, but I've been too lazy to drive out there and get it. If I initially went when I thought about getting it, it was priced at $85 or so. Now it's only $65. If this CPU dropped on the 5th I would have had reason to go out there to snatch a 5600X3D and RAM.....

Only $50 cheaper than 5800X3D with two more cores and 100 MHz faster clock, and $110 more than 5600x, can't see this selling, at least not to people with a working brain.

Needed to be $199 at most. This reject 5800X3D costing more than the 5800X is a joke.

The point of the X3D chips was a final upgrade to AM4, this is more of a sidegrade.

$169 would have been more realistic, $50 premium over 5600X, and it doesn't have the lustre of the 5800X3D which is allowed to be expensive as its the best.

I wonder if it's 100 MHz slower exactly, that would be 4.45 GHz, not 4.4.

Micro Center will also offer bundle deals with that CPU and the supply will last for three to sixth months.

Sadly, I can't get one here in the EU.
