AMD's RX 7900 Series Enjoys Sales Increase in China Following NVIDIA Export Restrictions

A somewhat expected result of the November 17th export ban on RTX 4090 GPUs to China has been that AMD's top offerings; recently rumored to soon suffer the same fate, have been selling faster than AMD or its partners can make them. Predicting the worst, some OEMs such as Dell have allegedly already set their own self-imposed restrictions on the export of both Radeon and Instinct cards to China. Meanwhile insiders in board channels have not yet received any official warning that they can no longer sell RX 7900 XTXs or XTs to DIY markets, however vendors and consumers alike sense an oncoming storm and unable to get RTX 4090s are buying up as many of the high end Radeons as they can.

It's said that AMD's production capacity for this surge in sales has been underwhelming, and supply to Chinese board partners has been barely trickling in. This lack of incoming supply of the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and XT, restriction or not, is creating a shortage of cards in China that is expected to impact the remainder of Q4 2023 and much of Q1 2024. With no immediate restrictions expected for AMD's top cards it's possible that they could react and ramp up exports to cover the demand, however that could be risky if AMD is trying to avoid being targeted.

How lucky for AMD that a lack of the product people actually wanted is selling theirs lol, now if they can just keep up with demand it might show a bigger slice on upcoming steam surveys too, and perhaps help the desire to stay in the high end market.

You know GPUs will be used for AI and computing, the minority is for gaming.

Is there ANY company in any industry that has surplus inventory just sitting around in case there's a completely unprecedented surge on demand? Especially in this day and age where "just in time" inventory schemes are the norm.

Seems unfair that China is being sanctioned. And for what? Seems like purely political-economic reasons alone (as in the West trying to stop a competitive economy/sphere of influence).

When a country can't remain neutral in an armed conflict, it's also sad. Being forced to stop trading non-military tech with a country is not nice - what should China do? Stop trading with both sides (most of the world)?

These issues with China started way before that in Trump-times though (if not even earlier, but that is what I remember).
Yes that was more political at the time. There was a lot of resentment after the revelations of Covid. This is not a ban on all sales. Not even 4080s and now the cards from AMD are 7900s with a minimum of 20GB of VRAM. It is obvious that they are looking at the Compute performance of the cards and AI potential.

Makes sense next best cards are the 7900XTX and 7900XT. 4080 is too expensive and slower than the 7900XTX. 4070TI can't even compare to the 7900XT other than they're around the same price at times.

On a larger scale, pulling back Chinese companies are finally starting to dip their toes into AI. Even BYD whose been chasing Tesla whom has ignored ADAS and AI, finally said they are gonna do it.

For AI computations...is it? I would like to know if the 7900XTX is actually better than the 4080 in that department. We know it is the second best card in non-RT gaming.

The Radeon is practically never better unless code is hand optimized for its architecture and driver/runtime performance is carefully taken into account. HIP doesn't hold a candle to CUDA currently and it may never do so.
