Serkan Toto, CEO of Tokyo-based games consultancy Kantan Games was interviewed by CNBC earlier this week—he was invited on-air to provide expert commentary on Sony's freshly revised sales and revenue forecast for PlayStation 5 products. He believes that great forward momentum is best achieved with refreshed hardware, and a well timed launch coinciding with the release of AAA/blockbuster games titles. Last autumn's rollout of slimmer PlayStation 5 consoles was not particularly exciting—with no major bump up in specs or attractive pricing. The development of an inevitable "Pro" variant has circulated around rumor mills for more than a year.

Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) and AMD are believed to co-operating on a very potent hardware redesign—reports from late last year posited that a semi-custom "Viola" SoC is in the pipeline. A more expensive RDNA 3-upgraded refresh could attract an additional segment of hardcore gamers, but another industry analyst reckons that Sony is unlikely to implement a standard model price cut later this year (based on past trends). George Jijiashvili, senior principal analyst at Omdia, stated: "A scenario where Sony launches a PS5 Pro, but still experiences declining year-on-year hardware sales is very much within the realms of possibility." Serkan Toto (of Kantan Games consultancy) expressed a more optimistic view: "There seems to be a broad consensus in the game industry that Sony is indeed preparing a launch of a PS5 Pro in the second half of 2024...And Sony will want to make sure to have a great piece of hardware ready when GTA VI hits in 2025, a launch that will be a shot in the arm for the entire gaming industry."

This gen has been slow to sell because there's no major R* game released for it. Hell remember they showed off GTA5 for the PS5 trailer, should've told you right there that this gen would be extremely underwhelming.

Cause of the PS5 Pointless Pro? We'll see, I doubt it, seriously.

probably when gta6 comes out...

GTA6 is set for 2025 and is not a Sony sponsored title to launch with the console, could still happen but I would bet more on the console coming out well ahead of it in november like the majority of console launches. I don't know what major tittle will release along with it this year though?

Neither did the PS3 or PS4 for a good while and they still sold, in comparison the PS5 sold even more because this generation was weird with the pandemic and lack of pc hardware. It sold very well in the beginning but is slowing down I guess because at some point people get tired of remaster after remaster.

PC gaming is already seeing a hit because of the current gpu landscape, a new model with better performance probably close in price to the current regular version will only exacerbate matters (they usually discount the regular and put the pro version in it's place but all recent news have been kind of setting the stage for a price increase).

Do you not remember the greatest GTA of all time? GTA IV. Also to be fair the step from PS2 to PS3 was much more dramatic than PS3>4>5 steps. PS3 was only out for like 18 months but the 360 was out for like 30 months when IV launched. I'm pretty sure GTA V sold most of its copies on PS3/X360 though.

Its hard to say but I could see a fair amount of consoles being sold when GTA 6 comes. More so than PC players switching to console when PS5 Pro comes because of it's ever so slightly better specs than the standard. I think there's quite a few people who just haven't bought a new console because they can enjoy most of the newer stuff on last gen.

Honestly, I don't think I ever said people are gonna ditch their PCs for the PS5 Pro. Let's think about it - there are folks just stepping into gaming, and for them, starting with PCs might not be the best move right now. With GPU prices through the roof due to high demand elsewhere for chips, it's not the most ideal setup, especially if you don't need a PC for other stuff too.

Oh I think misread that a little. But still, I doubt the PS5P is going to make people feel reluctant or left out about any recent hardware purchase/upgrade.

Used market has a lot good choices. Especially 30 series nvidia.

Also consoles aren't really that cheap anymore, especially over the course of their lives. Paying to use online features adds up over the years. Full price games add up quickly. PC cost more initially usually but are cheaper to use over time as where consoles are the exact opposite, cheap at first but costly over time.
Yeah I'm not gonna feel any bit worried about a PS5Pro being faster than a 3080, cause it's not lol

Feels like Sony have forgotten software makes a console successful, there is still barely any PS5 games.

I was just pointing out how the costs compare over time and how I doubt PC users will fell the least bit threatened by a console refresh.

But yes average people can do math. Most people live on a budget.
