AMD's new FidelityFX Super Resolution 3.1 update (FSR 3.1) features improvements to upscaling quality and Frame Generation. It is now possible to run FSR Frame Generation without any upscaling, or combine it with DLSS, which finally gives GeForce 30 gamers a feasible framegen option.

Like I've observed locally the best part of this update is you can run DLSS with AMD frame generation on older Nvidia cards.... XESS and DLSS still look better. They just need to fix them frametimes....

Those numbers are wrong.

1440p FSR 3.1 Quality = 106fps , actual = 98fps
1440p FSR 3.1 Balanced= 107fps , actual = 101fps

You sure those images are from FSR3.1?

This is something that you rarely see these days, a positive title.

The paid influencers at Jensen’s Hardware (formerly called Tom’s). Ngreedia Foundry and Ngreedia Unboxed are “$incapable$” of using such expression or even understanding what it means for the gaming market.

I tried FSR upscaling plus framegen and it looked and felt horrible. Flickering and shimmering and aliasing all over the place plus high latency. Switched to DLSS upscaling with FSR framegen and now it looks much better but the higher latency is really annoying. Ended up disabling FSR framegen.

Not sure why, but I get weird ass frametimes using framegen, in some games but not others. It's definitely tied to input; butter smooth standing still and watching other things move, but then when you move mouse it just turns into a chunky stutter fest.

CP2077 and Witcher3NG work fine (input-wise).

Hogwarts and Horizon Forbidden West exhibit this behavior. HFW acts weird with both DLSSFG and FSR3FG. Spent several hours in both, trying every possible combination of driver/app VSYNC GSYNC Reflex etc. I can't get either to work like Cyberpunk and W3.

FG visually is great, but i have problem with frame pacing and some problems with sync on vrr displays. Hope they will fix this.

While I don't think it's BS on his computer I don't think it's the norm as both my nvidia systems don't exhibit the behavior either.

All Nixxes games, Ratchet, HFW.

Same, visually it looks close enough to nvidia frame gen at 70+ base fps but it doesn't feel nearly as smooth.

Both technologies I can only stomach on a controller but everyone has different sensitivity to latency.

Yes, maybe its just his system, it seems you have to have enough vram on gpu.

honestly, I think 2 looks better....just a bit more defined and sharp

in the video its harder to tell but honestly, pretty disappointed in this "update" after all this time.

OK so I'm not alone here.
In the side-by-sides FSR 3.1 looks blurrier / smudged by contrast, more TAA-esque.

Honestly as much as I enjoy looking at these comparison all of this has to be viewed natively or you are not going to get the full picture.... Youtube compression is horrendous.

At the end of the day this sort of thing will always be subjective I currently can more live with the issues DLSS exhibit over what FSR does but everyone has to use both extensively to make a judgment. Honestly FSR 2.2 and older were so bad on my Nvidia gpu's I built an all AMD system just to make sure there was no funny business going on and at least to my eyes it looks the same on a 6700XT/3080ti/4090 which to my eyes is not good below 4k quality which is at least passable/usable.

The frame gen is promising though if they can just figure out the frame times but maybe that isn't possible without a implementation like Nvidia has which doesn't exhibit that behavior.

True, fully intend on playing with it myself natively as well to see.

Decoupling it from upscaling is the best news I got out of this.
Keeping native res is a priority for me, I'll use DLAA but never DLSS unless I absolutely have to.

I really like DLSS Quality at 4k but at 1440p and below DLAA or bust for me also..... I can live with DLSS quality if I have to but only if it allows something else that offsets it's downsides like path tracing.

My only experience with AMD's frame gen was using AFMF. And while frame timing was almost sinusoidal (according to the Radeon overlay), Anti-Lag made that experience absolutely smooth. I really couldn't point any graphical nor input fault.

You'd need to extensively use Nvidia frame generation to compare which is substantially smoother.... Maybe I am just overly sensitive to frametime differences. It is an issue on all 3 of my systems regardless of setting used on 3 different displays to the point it just feels much better off.

To be fair I only like frame gen in 2 games CP2077/Alan Wake 2 in every other game I've used it in I would rather leave it off but that is for other reason not frametimes so maybe a more me issue but in every performance testing online by a person I trust you can easily see the frametime spikes with it on.

As much as I wish FSR's frame upscaling to be best in class or close to as good as Nvidia It really isn't, in actual use those trails behind flying insects are distracting in gameplay. More so than pixelation / shimmering. Still good to see it improved, just hope they will pick up pace and the next update will follow sooner than the last. Or they introduce a version making use of the ai compute in RDNA3 at least, if that's the way to impove.

Processor So old, you don't wanna know... Really!
Not really anything exceptional or worth to write about. But I really think, this could be a great thing for small handheld devices like Steam Deck, or AYANEO, etc, where those struggle to give a decent performance with some very requiring games. The question is, how does this work for Linux environment.

The channel that Nvidia blacklisted because they refused to focus on RT benchmarks like Nvidia wanted when 90% of the popular games didn't even have raytracing at all?
The channel that has been dumping on Nvidia non-stop for the last two years for being meagre with VRAM and demonstrating in dozens of videos how cheaper Radeons outperform RTX cards that run out of VRAM?

I think you need to brush up on your history before making childish and inaccurate accusations like that.

Oh please, you know very well that right after that, they have been kissing Ngreedias behind non stop, have not stopped using * gasp* RT to keep trashing AMD non stop, even though as you said, is still not used in over 95% of existing games.

Example, forgot how Tim went ballistic on the RUMOR that AMD was blocking his beloved DLSS in Starfield? The dude released 3 hit pieces against AMD and yet never retracted them when AMD responded that no, they never said to do not use DLSS. By the way, they have never, ever called DLSS anticonsumer.

Again, they mention that, but in the end, will say "buy Ngreedia". Better yet, they love to call every single AMD GPU DOA but never use that temr on Ngreedia.

90% of their titles about AMD is with a negative nature.
