The ADATA Legend 970 Pro is the first SSD that supplies power to the integrated fan internally. There is no need for the bulky, external power cable that we saw on all other Gen 5 drives so far. Built on the Innogrit IG5666 controller, the Legend 970 Pro is challenging Phison's dominance, with mixed results though.

I have yet to see a Gen 5 drive that has the power consumption numbers that would be worth it to me to put in a laptop...otherwise Gen 4 or heck even Gen 3 has better power consumption numbers...

When it comes to laptop storage, I believe the main two factors are 1) cost efficiency and 2) power consumption. It took a while for laptops to jump to flash storage as a main device for a while due to cost, and even now some budget laptops/AIOs come with a secondary slimline HDD for bulk on top of a (usually) 128GB NVMe stick. IMO we'll be seeing gen 3/4 drives in laptops for a long while until gen 5 has matured enough to be able to lose the supersize heatsinks and operate below 5W full bore. Hell, were I to be looking at a new NVMe drive I'd probably be looking into a high-end gen 4 drive like the P44 Pro/P41 Platinum, T500, or SN850X, something that'll prove a worthy successor to the SN770 working as my boot drive. Especially since I'm still on AM4...

ADATA Legend 970 Pro 2 TB Review

  • PCIe Gen5 x4 transmission interface
  • Up to 14,000/11,000MB/s sequential read/write speed

Why do we need active cooling? The heat generated by high-speed PCIe 5.0 transmission can no longer be effectively dissipated by standard heatsinks and high temperatures will affect the reading/writing speed of data. Even worse, unmitigated heat will crash the system in seconds. The LEGEND 970 PRO's active heat dissipation has been analyzed and optimized using multiple thermal simulations. It can withstand a high temperature environment while maintaining stable performance even when operating at top speed over a long period of time.

Honestly I see something around 1.5 GB/s. The text claims its around 1.7 GB/s. That is far off the 11GB/s

Sidenote: I never had a NVME SSD or a SATA SSD crash because of overheating so far. Bigger Numbers are better. Using the proper Units is not possible. e.g. GB/s or GiB/s

First time watching level loading times. Man, 70 seconds for Baldurs Gate 3 is insane for >300$ (gaming/top) ssd. Where is that dxstorage 1sec load time?

That idle power kills it.

  • Very high power consumption
Yeah, no kidding lol. Its pretty insane actually.

Are the vendors even trying? How hard can it be to implement a low power idle mode.
High power consumption is because it has a fan with no fan stop & the IG5666 controller isn't an efficient controller, but mostly, it's the fan. It's not complicated. This SSD does not need to be efficient anyway, it won't be going into a laptop, and the difference between 4w & 8w power draw over a year is... pennies in a PC.

Worst thing about this drive is it has a tiny noisy fan that is always running, and the value just isn't there($146 per terabyte, ouch).

Fanless gen 5 have the same issue. I also think "its no big deal" is a bad attitude when it comes to these things, everything should be made as efficient as possible. Its doable, and 4-8w is just unacceptable for a no moving parts SSD to idle at.

DirectStorage probably would not help there, it’s not graphical assets that BG3 is loading, primarily, methinks. There is a ton of AI logic in that game, variables for interactions, that kind of stuff.

Anyway, Gen 5 SSDs continue to be utterly pointless for anyone who isn’t doing tons of linear reads or writes daily, more news at 11.

Except this SSD has a moving part, a fan. That's why this SSD's idle is so high. Should it have fan stop? Yes. Do I expect that much from a value-oriented, high-volume, minimal-engineering company like ADATA? No.

But really, right now 5.0 PCIe drives should not be expected to be energy efficient. It's pretty clear that it's almost impossible feat with the nodes that the controllers/NAND are using. These are not drives that will go into a laptop anytime soon, and like I said, the difference between 4w & 8w is pennies. It's a meaningless difference in a desktop PC.

Looks a reasonably good SSD!

@W1zzard
I don't see the point for keeping SATA devices in the comparisons,

These old drives are distorting the bars since the modern m.2 SSD-s are compressed to pixels
