AMD Opens New Engineering Design Center in Serbia

Today, AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) opened a new engineering design center in Serbia, with offices in Belgrade and Nis, strengthening its presence in the Balkans region. The new design center will employ highly skilled software engineers focused on the development of software technologies optimized for AMD leadership compute platforms, including the AMD ROCm software stack for AMD Instinct data center accelerators and AMD Radeon graphics cards. The center was established through an agreement with HTEC, a global technology services company.

"Software plays a critical role in unlocking the capabilities of our leadership AMD hardware. Our new design center will be instrumental in enabling both the design and deployment of future generations of AMD Instinct and Radeon accelerators to help make end-to-end AI solutions more accessible to customers around the world," said Andrej Zdravkovic, senior vice president and chief software officer at AMD. "Our investments in Serbia are a testament to the Balkan region's strong engineering talent, and we are excited to collaborate with HTEC, local universities and the vibrant ecosystem in Belgrade and Nis as we deepen our presence in the region over the coming years."

Under the leadership of industry veteran Đorđe Simić, the AMD teams will focus on developing AI, graphics and software technologies for use across multiple products, as well as on optimizing open-source tools, libraries and models to make it simpler and more scalable to run the latest AI applications on AMD hardware.

"As an engineer, I am excited to join AMD and lead our talented teams in Belgrade and Nis," said Đorđe Simić, director of software development and Serbia country manager at AMD. "It is great to be part of the company that is pioneering AI advancements and constantly pushing the boundaries in semiconductor and software innovations."

AMD most recently expanded its engineering presence in the Balkan region with the opening of an R&D center in 2021 in Iasi, Romania, and will continue to work with HTEC and other regional technology services firms to supplement software and hardware development projects. In addition, AMD plans to establish collaboration with local universities to provide educational resources and engineering internship programs, aiming to further develop local engineering capabilities in support of its future growth plans in Serbia.

Like it or not AI is the future and generally it enables us to do things more quickly and easily across a variety of fields. I think it'll turn out fine from the perspective of increased productivity and enabling people to perform tasks they might not be capable or qualified of doing otherwise without the help and aid of AI. Some person somehow can obviously do many or most of these AI tasks or a portion of them depending on scope and size, but no one is expert at all of the things AI is capable of being trained on. It's the modern computer which is in turn simply the modern calculator.

It's technological innovation and evolution. We have two paths we can walk adapt and evolve and live in the future or don't and try to live in past that doesn't exist and go extinct by not adapting or evolving in the right ways to ensure our survival within our scope of the universe. Trying to resist and avoid change doesn't mean you've avoided it however change will come now matter what beyond our own control thus we either find ways to adapt or perish.

I also think AI is relevant and will just straight up grow until a certain point. Companies are focusing their big bucks in the segment, and I just hope that will turn out indeed lucrative as they expect to be.
At the consumer side, I also hope (but with a lack of faith) the "AI in everything" will not increase all prices and force techs no one wants to use as "features" as the new norm tomorrow, to compensate the huge investments being made today.
