Truly ground breaking, "AI" is used no less than 38 times in this corporate marketing propaganda rubbish, so I'm sure it was written either by a generative model with a prompt constructed by someone with an IQ of a wet wipe, or such a wet wipe itself.

ChatGPT, write press release for new motherboards using "AI" as many times as possible.

Anyway, show me a couple nice performing ITX or m-ATX boards and I'll be interested.

Compared to X870 offerings which have heavily castrated PCIe slots these are miles better in that aspect.

2020hrs of 9th Oct here in India so couple of hours left for 10th.
India doesn't count, you live in a half hour time zone shadow :p

This doesn't bode well for Thunderbolt 5.
Because of the limited I/O resources of the PC architecture, the number of Thunderbolt™ devices that can be used is dependent on the number of the PCI Express devices being installed.

I do like the look of the ai top and xtreme boards despite their stupid gimmick name

Nice to finally see a semi decent mATX option too, will get one if it turns out to be the best option.

Compared to X870 offerings which have heavily castrated PCIe slots these are miles better in that aspect.
I have to agree, even though Z890 seems to be identical to Z790 and the CPU only received a mild upgrade concerning I/O, the overall offering is much better. PCIe5.0x16, two independent M.2 from CPU (1xGen5x4, 1xGen4x4), 1-2xTB4 from CPU, 2-3 M.2 from PCH (all Gen4x4), 1-2 Gen4x4 PCIe-slots and 4xSATA on almost all boards.

AMD has done itself a disservice by not adding USB4 to the IOD, but making an ASM4242-controller mandatory on X870(E), sacrifcing 4 Gen5-lanes from CPU. AM5 is theoretically still much better suited for heavy SSD-use, since one can attach up to 6 Gen5-SSD to the CPU and put them in RAID-mode (now even RAID5), but almost no board makes this possible. Much more X870(E)-boards offer the possibility to sacrifice 8 Lanes Gen5 from x16-slot for two additional M.2, but they always lose 4 Lanes for USB4.

This doesn't bode well for Thunderbolt 5.
What does that even mean? TB4 comes from CPU on this platform and should have nothing to do with PCIe-lanes.

Aero G and Xtreme AI Top have TB5-controllers onboard by the way.

even though Z890 seems to be identical to Z790 and the CPU only received a mild upgrade concerning I/O
The upgrade from Z790 -> Z890 seems to be upgrading the 16 PCIe lanes(those that weren`t already gen 4) from the chipset from Gen 3 to Gen 4, which is a considerable upgrade though not very exciting.

For the CPU, it got way more though, I would say it's a bit more than just mild, and I don't think it's mild. LGA 1700 had 16 lanes of Gen 5 and 4 lanes of Gen 4(not counting chipset lanes), while it's now going to have 20 lanes of Gen 5(16+4), 4 lanes of Gen 4 and 2 TB4.

If all you care about is IO then it seems like Intel offers a considerably better platform than AM5.

Though your mileage will vary a lot as not all Z890-implement the TB4s ports or it might be just one of them or the chipset lanes to other things like PCIe slots or nvme.

And it's probably going to be extremely overpriced. I am betting it's more expensive than AM5 stuff.

Aero G and Xtreme AI Top have TB5-controllers onboard by the way.
Hence the issue with TB5, it's an external controller which is eating PCIe lanes, so it seems like there are PCIe lane limitations on the Z890 platform if you want Thunderbolt 5, just like on X870/E.
Since the manuals aren't up yet, it's not possible to check what the exact limitations are.

And it's probably going to be extremely overpriced. I am betting it's more expensive than AM5 stuff.
Some early pricing leaks, starts at €330 for a basic board.

Was happy to see an MATX board.... was less happy to see that the front panel audio header placement - any card with a full width shroud will likely interfere with it sticking out, assuming you use 2 GPUs of course.

Hence the issue with TB5
It has nothing to do with TB5, this warning is in the specs of almost all boards, even those with only 1xTB4:
Because of the limited I/O resources of the PC architecture, the number of Thunderbolt™devices that can be used is dependent on the number of the PCI Express devices beinginstalled. (Refer to Chapter 2-6, "Back Panel Connectors," for more information.)

The upgrade from Z790 -> Z890 seems to be upgrading the 16 PCIe lanes(those that weren`t already gen 4) from the chipset from Gen 3 to Gen 4, which is a considerable upgrade though not very exciting.
Where did you get that info, Z890 still seems to have plenty of gen3-lanes. Most of them will be used for SATA, 2.5GbE, WiFi and USB3.2, though.
I would say it's a bit more than just mild
Yes, you are right. I meant it doesn't sound much, 4 additional lanes and 2xTB4, but it has quite the impact on IO-capabilities. Still, 4xSSD @CPU max, only 3xGen5. Still can only split htat x16 into x8/x8.
Z890 AERO G for "creators"
Still on 2.5Gbps LAN, even if it's dual 2.5
As far as I can see, dual 2.5GbE and PCIe x8/x8 are Aero G's only selling points. Aero G always was just slightly orientated to creators, Aero D was the real deal, but not available in every generation (and rarely on AMD). But since Aero D's main features often were 10GbE and Thunderbolt3/4, this role now goes to Z890 AI Top.

There are three mATX boards, although one has a white and a black SKU.

It has nothing to do with TB5, this warning is in the specs of almost all boards, even those with only 1xTB4:
Why would that have anything to do with the amount of PCIe devices being installed, if the TB4 stuff is integrated in the CPU?
That makes no sense at all.

Z890 has zero PCIe 3.0 lanes, loads of typos and mistakes in the Gigabyte specs.
